Description of project:

MonetDB http://monetdb.cwi.nl/ is a open-source column-oriented database system for high-performance, query intensive applications in data mining, OLAP, GIS, XML Query, text and multimedia retrieval. MonetDB often achieves a 10-fold raw speed improvement for SQL and XQuery over competitor RDBMSs.

Currently there are programming interfaces for c/c++, perl, php, python, jdbc, & odbc. http://monetdb.cwi.nl/projects/monetdb/SQL/Documentation/Programming-Interfaces.html

Common lisp could currently interface monetdb only through odbc driver which gave me a mixed feelings, beside there is overhead of managing odbc connection, lack of  functionality etc.

I'm building the interaction layer for common lisp through mapi the c/c++ library  http://homepages.cwi.nl/~mk/MonetDB/The-Mapi-Library.html 

using cffi http://common-lisp.net/project/cffi/  so I'm expecting a portable result. First I'll finish the lower layer with c like interaction from lisp than add some lispy layer of communication. Also the lower layer could later used as a backend for clsql if Kevin Rosenberg is interested incorporating it.
