[armedbear-devel] Working toward the 0.23 release

We've had a productive number of weeks since our last release. Changes include: * Running the Maxima test suite without failure [Thanks to the Maxima team for their part in this!] * CLOS thread safety fixes * Fixes to be able to run on Oracle JRockit JVM * Numerous tickets fixed * A new class file writer to build further optimizations upon So, I think we should be moving toward a release real soon now. Is there more to be added to trunk? If not, I'll be branching by the end of the weekend; otherwise, let's discuss and see what timelines to set. Everybody, thanks again for your contributions! [armedbear-devel] Soliciting (updates to) testimonials

In the interest of informing potential users about the various uses, strengths and weaknesses of ABCL, we have a Testimonials page. However, most of the testimonials don't have a date. That's rather unfortunate, because it makes it hard to judge how valid they still are: over the past three years, we had quite a bit of change in our code base. Most of the changes were driven by CLHS compliance, correctness or code cleanup (to support future maintenance). So, there's a good chance some of the older testimonials don't actually apply to current ABCL versions anymore. Just removing those older testimonials (leaving a blank page) isn't really an option for me. OTOH, leaving them up there without a date isn't really indicative of today's ABCL either. That's why I'm asking you to submit your (updated) testimonials. If you're currently using ABCL (or have been using until recently), but there's no testimonial up on the page from you, please take a quick look at the top testimonial at http://common-lisp.net/project/armedbear/testimonials.shtml (the one by David Kirkman). As you see, it doesn't have to be much, so, creating a testimonial doesn't have to take a lot of time. Taking the half hour to create a testimonial is your opportunity to donate back to the ABCL community! Thanks for your time and contributions, Erik.

Dear ABCL developers, the one big thing missing in ABCL to fully pass the ASDF test suite is support for (directory "/usr/share/common-lisp/source/**/*.asd") Could you get it to work and update to the latest stable ASDF? Hi, compiling ltk I have the following error: #<THREAD "interpreter" {FE135D}>: Debugger invoked on condition of type SIMPLE-ERROR s2 argument 34666 out of 16-bit signed range. Debugging a bit, I found that the error is in "compiler-pass2.lisp" in the function "code-bytes" during the pass2 (replace labels with calculated offsets). What can I do to avoid this error? Just a minute ago, I committed Mark Evenson's work on DEFINE-METHOD-COMBINATION (long form) [short: D-M-C]. It's a port to ABCL of the D-M-C implementation found in XCL which derives from Sacla. That being the case, I expect the implementation to be little tested. Which can definitely be said of the port. However, some testing with a few self-made tests didn't turn up many problems. However, SBCL has a series of tests for D-M-C. It would be nice if we could port those to ABCL too in an effort to smoke out any issues our D-M-C implementation may have. I smoked out the first one already that way: there was a quote missing is a function which returns a part of a method combination form. Compile times just longer once again - however, there should be no measurable impact for any code which doesn't use the long form of D-M-C itself. Serious request: help smoke out problems! Test! Fix! The sooner we get good confidence in the implementation, the sooner we can release 0.23! Bye, Erik.

Dear ABCL developers, trying to "compile-file" the following fragment of code using the latest release results in an error "s2 argument 32778 out of 16-bit signed range." ----------------------------------------------------- (defmacro many-functions (n) (append '(progn) (loop for i from 1 to n collect `(defun ,(intern (format nil "TEST~A" i)) () (print ,i))))) (many-functions 1525) ----------------------------------------------------- There are no problems with 0.20 (even for much bigger values of the parameter, i.e. bigger output files). I encountered the problem with a file containing several calls to the macro def-java-class in Jfli. It took me some time to discover that splitting the file in two was enough to make the problem go away... This is not a critical bug (it's usually easy to reorganize the code to ensure the files are small enough), but you might want to look at it. Cheers, Carlos

I am an old hand at cl, but java is still a bit of a mystery to me. I am particularly puzzled as to why, when trying to use the apache http components library to do a simple http get in abcl, I cannot make it work. For some reason, my code fails with No such method: org.apache.http.impl.client.DefaultHttpClient.execute(). I do have the appropriate jars in my class path. The java code specifically calls the execute method on its instantiated httpclient, but I cannot do the same from abcl. Hi ABCL-developers, Thank you for releasing abcl-0.22! I'm playing with AbclScriptEngine (with Electric VLSI) and found a tiny problem with config.lisp: EXT:MAKE-THREAD should be THREADS:MAKE-THREAD. Unfortunately the problem was unnecessary hard to debug because in the absence of TPL::REPL the debugger ends up quitting the entire application. I'm wondering if in that case it would be more useful to throw a Java error, eg like SYS::%DEBUGGER-HOOK-FUNCTION? Best regards, Ole
