It seems like ABCL does not yet provide the gray stream classes FUNDAMENTAL-CHARACTER-OUTPUT-STREAM and FUNDAMENTAL-CHARACTER-INPUT-STREAM, and some other stuff.
Look at *GRAY-STREAM-SYMBOLS* in swank-backend.lisp.
Your patch also renamed lot of stuff to start with a gray- prefix. I think it's better to put the gray stuff into its own package.
