Thanks for that very helpful reply. I'll look into both threading libraries. In the meantime, I created a ".swank.lisp" in my home directory, and added the text "(setf swank:*globally-redirect-io* t)". I restarted emacs and abcl, and now my threading example as well as my actual code works great. I can see all the formats.
