i would very much like it to be an optional, configurable contribution rather than part of the core implementation.
I have sympathy with making it optional (in fact, I argued for turning asdf-binary-locations into a contrib rather than merging way back.) However: Isn't asdf-output-locations somewhat like a CL pendant to `make install' if you squint your eyes? Shouldn't that be an integral part of ASDF? -T.
