IIUC, this MR does papering over a SBCL bug that was since solved, in a way that adds complexity but isn't 100% robust. I'd vote for rejecting it entirely.

I didn't participate in this discussion, and reading over it, I don't really understand what this MR is trying to accomplish. Can you sum it up? Should we merge it before this release?
