* README should say how to build the manual
* That said, how is the user supposed to build the manual?
There does not seem to be any rule for it in the Makefile.
* texipdf asdf.texinfo resulted in an error; an asdf.pdf was produced nontheless. See PS for transcript.
* the manual should perhaps start with a "What's new" section which mostly contains links to the appropriate pages.

makeinfo asdf.texinfo makeinfo --html asdf.texinfo
The manual does not build to hardcopy using TeX right now because it has some ampersands in it that confuse TeX. Googling has not revealed to me how to escape an `&'.
For now HTML and info format output will have to do.
Launchpad bug filed, https://bugs.launchpad.net/asdf/+bug/542269
There does not seem to be any rule for it in the Makefile.
I am knocking off for today, so can't do this now.

the manual should perhaps start with a "What's new" section which mostly contains links to the appropriate pages.
Please launchpad this one with a description of what you'd like to see, and maybe someone will take it.

Put this into the @ifnottex secttion, and use @&key, etc.

Directory-grovelling system definition search, output translations, upgradability from upstream source;
any other especially noteworthy news?

The manual already has a "What has changed between ASDF 1 and ASDF 2?" section, with the following subsections: @subsection ASDF can portably name files inside systems and components @subsection Output translations @subsection Source Registry Configuration @subsection Usual operations are made easier to the user @subsection Many bugs have been fixed @subsection ASDF itself is versioned @subsection ASDF can be upgraded @subsection Decoupled release cycle
I could probably have added notes about extensions for ECL, support for ABCL, XCVB compatibility, and more.

Oh, right, it's in the FAQ. I suggest adding a link from the Introduction section to that question.
