Hey Folks:
I'm interested in taking charge of this group and giving it some direction. I've been subscribed to this list for a few months, and haven't seen any activity. I'm really interested in hanging out with some Lisp hackers, and I think it's a shame that there's no activity here.
In this vein, I'm inviting everyone interested to make it out next Saturday, 2006-12-02 @ 3p, to a pilot meeting at the Chicago Institute of Design. I operate the Chicago LUG, and have access to a really beautiful meeting space (4 big conference rooms, 20 white boards, projector, the works).
I'd like to run The Chicago LUG meeting concurrently; I'll be making a presentation (to both the Lisp and LUG groups) on setting up a good Lisp development environment (Slime, etc.) as an introduction for newer developers. The Chicago LUG has a number of functional developers (Erlang, Haskell and Lisp predominantly), so I'm trying to bootstrap the Lisp group by harnessing interest within the LUG.
Thoughts? Suggestions? I'd love to hear them. Please try to make it out, and RSVP if you're able to attend. If enough people show interest, we can have a forum after the presentation to plan things out. I'm willing to invest my time in starting/operating a web site, etc., but I want to make sure I'm not alone in wanting to make something of this group.
Regards, John Quigley http://www.chicagolug.org/~jquigley/
I'd love to attend. Count me in. Thanks for taking the initiative to get things started.
Vinay

I would also be interested in attending.

I am interested, but I most likely cannot make it this Saturday. But if things work out and future meetings are held, I would try to attend.

Sounds interesting! I will be there

The Chicago LUG would be the Chicago LISP User's Group, yes? ;-)

Sounds excellent. I'd like to be there - and I'll try - but I need directions. Not "Take the Von Ryan expressway to the Art Institute" but directions for dummies ;-) Depending on location, I'd either come in I90 or I94. Coming in on 94 is the route I know best...
And is there parking? How much?

Ahhh, synchronicity in action!

Excuse me for not being more specific, here's the details:
* Google map: http://tinyurl.com/mdqb3 * Description: 350 N LaSalle Street Chicago, Illinois 60610-4726 (reception on 6th floor)
The Institute of Design is located at 350 North LaSalle Street in downtown Chicago, on the southwest corner of LaSalle and Kinzie streets, just north of the Chicago River, between the Merchandise Mart and the old "Traffic Court" building.
If you're coming in off the Dan Ryan, you'll probably want to take the Ohio St. exit, and travel north-bound on LaSalle.
As for the IoD itself. The main entrance is on the north-east corner of the building (aka, the SW corner of the Kinzie St. and LaSalle intersection). There will be a door guard at the entrance, feel free to knock at the door (if you're early, it may be locked) or ask him questions. Tell him you're with the Chicago Lisp Group and are meeting on the 6th floor; he's very friendly and will guide you. I'll do my best to arrive rather early (around 2:30p), so that nobody is left confused or without company.
And is there parking? How much?
Yes, plenty of free parking, often on Kinzie St, just WEST of LaSalle. The IoD has a parking garage as well, on Kinzie St, just EAST of LaSalle, that's $6 per day for valid visitors (you'll be a valid visitor).
If there's any confusion, now or at the time of the meeting, I want you to call me on my cell at 312.351.3671.
On another note: we invite you to BYOB or food, as suits your taste. While alcohol is expressly permitted, we're obviously open to anyone of any age. Furthermore, the Chicago LUG (and I would love to make this a tradition within the Lisp group, as well), always goes out for food and drinks afterwards (formerly to Goose Island, but we're thinking of trying a new place this go-around). Naturally, we extend the invitation to any of you to join us.
Thanks for the response guys, I'm looking forward to meeting all of you and making something of this group.

Here's the meeting announcement that's propagating, just FYI:
---------- SNIP ------------
Folks:
The Chicago G/LUG and Lisp communities are having a joint meeting this coming Saturday, December 02, 2006 @ 3p, right in downtown Chicago at the Institute of Design.
Meeting info: http://www.chicagolug.org/Meetings Meeting agenda: http://www.chicagolug.org/Agenda_2006-12-02
The two groups will overlap with a presentation on SLIME, the Superior Lisp Interaction Mode for Emacs. The purpose of this presentation will be to instruct new Lispers in creating a remarkably powerful and beautiful development environment using entirely free software.
This is the first meeting of Chicago Lisp, and we invite everyone interested to come and help us develop ideas as to how to run the group.
After the meeting, join us for food and drinks as we geek it up over brews.
Questions and comments can be directed to lug@chicagolug.org, or join us on IRC at #chiglug@irc.oftc.net or lisp@irc.oftc.net.
Regards, John Quigley
