Hi, I was hoping to add cl-opengl as a main project to clbuild. Unfortunately cl-opengl and CLX both define a package called GL, so we cannot dump a core file including them. Is there a chance that cl-opengl might switch to a more specific package name? d.

Hi. Just a little note to say I've released cl-glfw-0.3 which now is able to work with cl-opengl (as well as with its own bindings, cl-glfw-opengl). So, maybe this option apart from SDL (with its custom application entry-point issues) and GLUT (for when you get stuck in a main loop) will be appealing to some. The only caveat, at the moment, is that libglfw mostly only comes as statically linked libraries by default. We have been petitioning the glfw maintainers for dynamically loaded libraries by default to ease this problem somewhat. Thanks for listening </flamebait> Ciao bill

[cl-opengl-devel] Fun GPLed Common Lisp OpenGL Molecule Viewer

Hi LispNYC/cl-opengl-devel! I just released a new Common Lisp program that I quickly hacked for a school assignment and have since cleaned up a bit. We were supposed to use C but I, of course, used lisp. :) It's a fancy 3D, interacive viewer for molecules using the OpenGL graphics libraries and the awesome cl-opengl bindings. Currently included molecules: water, ethanol. Read more about it and download it here: http://hcsw.org/blog.pl I was wondering if anyone can confirm this works for them on whatever environments or has any other comments. Also, cl-opengl-devel: feel free to include it as an example with the bindings if you feel it will help anyone! The random walk framerate testing mode is neat. The code is also good for getting an intuitive feeling for how GL lighting works as well as a good example of using rotation matrices in CL (gl:with-pushed-matrix is brilliant). But as the blog post concludes: The next generation of this program will not be a way to view molecules, but instead a way of interactively exploring diverse types polyhedron, like, for instance, the icosahedron and the infinite class of anti-prisms. And don't forget that every polyhedron has a dual (where the centre of each face becomes a vertex). Flipping between a polyhedron and its dual in real-time will be sweet. Since Luís hinted in a previous message to the list that consensus need be sought on whether or not to merge cl-opengl-thomas in to the main tree, I thought I would get the ball rolling for when he is free to do so (or not as the case may warrant). I offer these points as pro-merge: - With CFFI-new-types merged into CFFI-main, the main cl-opengl repo probably won't compile for anyone starting out using 'darcs get' or (require :cl-opengl) and will break for anyone using 'darcs pull' - Most recent patches have been requested to patch against the thomas branch - As far as I know, there's been no regression in the GL functionality area merge cons: - In it's current state, thomas will break some cl-glut-examples demos Anyone concluding differently or similarly? gl:tex-image-2d seems a bit slow (~23 sec for a 1k by 1k texture on SBCL 1.0.2 win32), attached patch speeds it up ~100x (to ~0.25 sec). Problem was that the element type in with-opengl-array wasn't constant (since it had been passed as a parameter to tex-image-2d) so cffi couldn't optimize for a specific type. Patch moves the type check out of the copy loop, and duplicates the loop for each type, so each case can be optimized individually. -- Bart
