so I did

     # apt-get install gawk


Also, a tool tip had an error message

     "mkdir /var/opt/gitlab/gitlab-rails/shared/pages/@pages.tmp"
     permission denied

or similar so I did

     # chmod o+w

on the shared/pages directory -- I hope that wasn't wrong?!


Anyway, it seems to work now.
