unfortunately I cannot recall whether I had this problem or not (and if so, what the solution was). However, I believe that the tarball at http://common-lisp.net/project/cxml/2001.tar.bz2 has pre-built versions of all files needed to run the test suite with cxml, based on a checkout from a few years ago.
