[eclm] Hotels in Amsterdam

Hi, I got exactly two replies to my question on the eurolisp list about your experiences with hotels in Amsterdam, so I also did some research on my own. The results are below. I'm sure that many people on this list would still appreciate recommendations (or unrecommendations) from those of you who actually staid in Amsterdam hotels. So if you have anything to add, please don't hesitate... Arthur * Hotel and map info From Nick Levine Nick says, quoting an email from 2005: > I've booked via lastminute.com into the Nadia (Raadhuisstraat 51, I > think near the Keizersgracht). It has decent reviews, isn't too > expensive, is reasonably close to both the station and Arthur's > most recent guess as to where we'll be meeting, and I think there's > a chance it won't be too noisy. ... Early bells but not too bad. But: eaten alive by mosquitos (this was also the case in the hotel I stayed at in 2004, so maybe there's no winning?) Nick also mentions that: http://www.hot-maps.de/europe/netherlands/amsterdam/homede.html is a really useful online streetmap. * Hotel unrecommendation from Dave Fox Dave Fox says: During ECLM'05 I stayed at Hotel Ajax, on Rokin. It was quite cheap and really really terrible. Do not go there. I wouldn't be surprised if Dave's unrecommendation also applies to some other hotels on Rokin. It's a street close to Central Station with quite a few tourist traps. * From Edi Weitz Edi says: I was at the "NH Tropen" once. Not exactly in the city center, but that might be a bonus as it was pretty quiet. Everything was more or less in walking distance, though, and it wasn't too shabby or too expensive. All of this is based on hearsay, general knowledge of the city and a bit of browsing, so I could be wrong... - Asterisk: http://www.asteriskhotel.nl/index_en.htm Address: Den Texstraat 16. Two stars. Room prices: 45-165 EUR. About 30 minutes walking distance from Felix Meritis (but there's also a tram going to the Leidseplein, which is close to Felix Meritis). Quiet location (not in the center, but not very far from the center either). Often used by my wife's colleague at the University of Amsterdam for foreign guests. - De Filosoof: http://www.hoteldefilosoof.nl Adress: Anna van den Vondelstraat 6. Three stars. Room prices: ca. 100-200 EUR. About 30 minutes walking distance from Felix Meritis (but there's also a tram going to the Leidseplein). Quiet location. Supposed to be a nice hotel. - Amsterdam American Hotel: http://www.booking.com/hotel/nl/american.html If you can afford it (room prices around 200 EUR), the Amsterdam American Hotel is probably a good choice. Four stars, great location (5-10 minutes walk from Felix Meritis), charming building. - Intercontinental Amstel: http://www.hotels.nl/amsterdam/amstel/ If you really have too much money (room prices starting at something like 350 EUR), try the Amstel Hotel, which is often visited by celebrities from all over the world (including at least one well known Lisper and his wife...). * Do it yourself - Booking.com Booking.com will let you search for hotels near one of their 'landmarks'. The landmark closest to Felix Meritis is probably "Begijnhof". Try http://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?landmark=12813 - Google Maps You can also try searching Google Maps for "hotel near Felix Meritis, Amsterdam". That's http://maps.google.com/maps?q=hotel+near+Felix+Meritis,+Amsterdam for those of you who rather click than type.
