I wouldn't be surprised if Dave's unrecommendation also applies to some other hotels on Rokin. It's a street close to Central Station with quite a few tourist traps.

Here's a list of some hotels (ordered by price) where I might stay myself if I didn't live here. All of this is based on hearsay, general knowledge of the city and a bit of browsing, so I could be wrong...

Address: Den Texstraat 16. Two stars. Room prices: 45-165 EUR.
About 30 minutes walking distance from Felix Meritis (but there's also a tram going to the Leidseplein, which is close to Felix Meritis). Quiet location (not in the center, but not very far from the center either). Often used by my wife's colleague at the University of Amsterdam for foreign guests.

Adress: Anna van den Vondelstraat 6. Three stars. Room prices: ca. 100-200 EUR.

If you can afford it (room prices around 200 EUR), the Amsterdam American Hotel is probably a good choice. Four stars, great location (5-10 minutes walk from Felix Meritis), charming building.
Intercontinental Amstel: http://www.hotels.nl/amsterdam/amstel/
If you really have too much money (room prices starting at something like 350 EUR), try the Amstel Hotel, which is often visited by celebrities from all over the world (including at least one well known Lisper and his wife...).
