[eclm] Questions regarding accommodation and parking on ECLM 2011

Hello *, the conference hotel is uhm, a little high price (224,- inc. breakfast is the lowest offer) -- so I wonder if there are any good alternatives within in (best short) walking distance. Might the NH Tropen (Linnaeusstraat, 2c -- still not cheap but 22% less) be an option? Any other recommendations would be highly welcome! What about parking options at/near the hotels and the meeting? Another concern of mine is the dinner at Saturday: - I haven't seen any information on when the dinner starts, as I'm not taking part in the guided tour, when will we meet at the Brasserie Harkema? - What is the best way to get to and from the Brasserie Harkema? Parking seems to be a big issue in Amsterdam and driving a car is incompatible to most convenient beverage... once again any hints are highly appreciated! cheers sascha -- Sascha Wilde Well, *my* brain likes to think it's vastly more powerful than any finite Turing machine but it hasn't proven that to me... -- Christopher Koppler in comp.lang.lisp

Hi Sascha, from my experience, getting around in Amsterdam is very easy by Tram. There is no need to choose a Hotel very close to the conference venue, as you can get there easily by public transport. You can also rent a bike. I'd not try to use the car - Parking space is rare and costly, and chances are that you'll have to walk quite a bit when you've finally found a slot that you can stay in. Acceptable lodging starts at 100 Euro per night, not including breakfast. Cheers, Hans On Sat, Sep 17, 2011 at 5:01 PM, Sascha Wilde <wilde@sha-bang.de> wrote:

Sounds good, is there an internet site (preferably in English) where I can get reliable information on routs using public transport? Seems google maps does so, but I'm not sure if it can be trusted (and of cause schedule is missing)... cheers sascha

http://journeyplanner.9292.nl/ should be able to tell you how to get from A to B in the Netherlands using public transport. Hotel Arena, where the meeting takes place, is a 5-10 minutes walk from subway station Weesperplein. Arthur

I suggest you give booking.com a chance, I got a very decent offer (sixty five euros for a double room) at the Tulip Inn Riverside hotel or something like that, not that close to the venue but with a very good direct connection by subway. Hth

I've never been there myself, but it looks like a reasonable option to me. It's a nice walk through the Oosterpark away from Hotel Arena, where the meeting takes place. And the tram will take you to the center of Amsterdam in 15 minutes or so.

Generally speaking, parking is difficult and/or expensive in Amsterdam. But NH Tropen mentions that they have a parking. Hotel Arena also has a parking, but I think it's only available for people who stay there.
- I haven't seen any information on when the dinner starts, as I'm not taking part in the guided tour, when will we meet at the Brasserie Harkema?
We'll post this on the mailing list in, I expect, a week or two.
- What is the best way to get to and from the Brasserie Harkema?
Brasserie Harkema is within walking distance (5-15 minutes) from subway stations Waterlooplein, Nieuwmarkt and Centraal Station. Waterlooplein also has a big parking, by the way.
Parking seems to be a big issue in Amsterdam and driving a car is incompatible to most convenient beverage...
Right. Then again, public transport is reasonably good until midnight or so (and taxis are rather expensive). Arthur

You can try the ECLM group booking for a lower price: go to http://www.hotelarena.nl/index.php?do=content&id=18&lang=eng, click on 'Online reservation', select 'Groups' from the menu, enter 'zaterdag' for Saturday night or 'zondag' for Sunday night, and you should get a better price than 224 EUR. I was at the NH Tropen in 2004. That's a while ago, but I guess it hasn't changed much. It's a typical middle-class chain hotel - a bit boring, but OK. And yes, they did have a parking lot at that time. Edi.

Many thanks to everybody for all the helpful replies! see you in Amsterdam... cheers sascha -- Sascha Wilde : "There are 10 types of people in the world. : Those who understand binary and those who don't."
