Hi! Just a reminder: The next meeting of Hamburg Lispers will be on Sunday (the day after tomorrow) at 2pm at the Landesjugendring Hamburg[1], Güntherstr. 34. [This is a Dutch one-day conference on using functional programming in university education. It's probably mostly about languages like Haskell and Helium, not Lisp. The talks will be in Dutch. I'm not involved in its organization, just promoting it a bit.] -- Er worden op de "FP-dag" door informatica-docenten van vooral universteiten wat praatjes gegeven over hoe functioneel programmeren wordt onderwezen, in welke talen, hoe studenten dat ervaren, en wat er beter kan. Hoewel niet over Lisp, maar vooral over Haskell en het Nijmeegse Helium, vond ik het wel interessant de vorige keer, dus daarom ga ik er weer heen. Het is in Groningen, 7 januari, tijd nog onbekend (uur of 10?), plaats: Senaatszaal van Academiegebouw (centrum). Dit keer georganiseerd door mensen van de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. The next meeting of Hamburg lispers will be on November 28. We might try to arrange for a dinner on Saturday evening. The original plan was to have a "large" meeting with international participants (like Amsterdam in September) in March 2005, so this November meeting was intended to be "small" instead. From the list of speakers you'll realize that it's not "small" at all. Anyway, there will nevertheless be another meeting in March and if whether you're from Hamburg or not you're encouraged to come to both meetings, of course... :) Cheers, Edi.

Recently I came again across Lightweight Languages Workshop 2002 http://ll2.ai.mit.edu/ You'll notice that Joe Armstrong's web server starts where Apache has already broken down due to too many concurrent users. I you go with OS threads, you'll never get there. I reread part's of Graham's On Lisp yesterday. There's one section where he mentions that a completely unperformant but working thing is still valuable to start with because it allows experimentation (similar topic idea in the article about the failure of the NIL machine/project). The reason why I want to depart from OS threads is because I expect different ways of computing arise when "threads" are extremely light weight (as in Erlang or Oz, not in UNIX), like different ways of computing arose when stack space became cheap or when memory became cheap. I.e. these days, many GNU programs allocate a few MB on the stack without shame, and programs long do in memory only what once were expensive disk-bound operations. This allows different algorithms to be used to address problems. OTOH maybe one can wait until a typical Linux can fork a 300000 threads on a 256MB machine (I haven't checked how far StateThreads and the other approaches can go). That's ~1KB per thread! [eurolisp] Beer, frankfurt, tomorrow?

Sorry if there's a more specific list for this, but I'm passing through Frankfurt ("am Main") tomorrow from around noon until around 7pm and wondered if any Lispers in the area fancied a beer or two in the afternoon? [eurolisp] Introductory text

Hi everybody, I have promised to write an introductory text for the eurolisp mailing list. Unfortunately, it has taken me more time to actually start to do it than I have originally planned. Fortunately, it was less work than I expected, especially because Atrhur has already provided a very good first step in a recent posting. So I have actually created a eurolisp page at http://alu.cliki.net/eurolisp and started with his text and a few minor modifications. I hope it represents the ideas of this mailing list well, including (but not limited to) the ideas of using multiple languages. If people have suggestions for improvement, I would ask them to just edit that page (that's what a wiki is there for), but make a small announcement in this mailing list as well.
