Recently I came again across Lightweight Languages Workshop 2002 http://ll2.ai.mit.edu/ You'll notice that Joe Armstrong's web server starts where Apache has already broken down due to too many concurrent users. I you go with OS threads, you'll never get there. I reread part's of Graham's On Lisp yesterday. There's one section where he mentions that a completely unperformant but working thing is still valuable to start with because it allows experimentation (similar topic idea in the article about the failure of the NIL machine/project). The reason why I want to depart from OS threads is because I expect different ways of computing arise when "threads" are extremely light weight (as in Erlang or Oz, not in UNIX), like different ways of computing arose when stack space became cheap or when memory became cheap. I.e. these days, many GNU programs allocate a few MB on the stack without shame, and programs long do in memory only what once were expensive disk-bound operations. This allows different algorithms to be used to address problems. OTOH maybe one can wait until a typical Linux can fork a 300000 threads on a 256MB machine (I haven't checked how far StateThreads and the other approaches can go). That's ~1KB per thread! [eurolisp] Beer, frankfurt, tomorrow?

Sorry if there's a more specific list for this, but I'm passing through Frankfurt ("am Main") tomorrow from around noon until around 7pm and wondered if any Lispers in the area fancied a beer or two in the afternoon? [eurolisp] Introductory text

Hi everybody, I have promised to write an introductory text for the eurolisp mailing list. Unfortunately, it has taken me more time to actually start to do it than I have originally planned. Fortunately, it was less work than I expected, especially because Atrhur has already provided a very good first step in a recent posting. So I have actually created a eurolisp page at http://alu.cliki.net/eurolisp and started with his text and a few minor modifications. I hope it represents the ideas of this mailing list well, including (but not limited to) the ideas of using multiple languages. If people have suggestions for improvement, I would ask them to just edit that page (that's what a wiki is there for), but make a small announcement in this mailing list as well. Good morning, Ok, the vote's 8 to 3 in favor of reply-to -> list by default. Tech can create arbitrary divisions, when ideally it should be configurable per-person. I believe the list is not automatically inserting a Reply-to: eurolisp(a)common-lisp.net into e-mail headers. Could anyone turn that on? Or if it is already on, could you explain why my posts so far haven't gotten such a Reply-to in the header? Kind regards, Dirk Gerrits

Hi, Right now there are 78 subscribers to this list. The main reason why we created this list is that many subscribers to the Benelux, Cologne and Hamburg mailing lists subscribe to all three lists and started to crosspost more and more often. In Amsterdam and in Cologne we talked about creating a mailing list for all Lispers in Europe, but nothing came out of it for a couple of months. Until we received another volley of triply (if that's not English, I'm sure it's pan-European ;-) crossposted messages last week, and Pascal Costanza suggested that we finally do something about it. Mario Mommer volunteered to create the mailing list on common-lisp.net, and Tayssir John Gabbour and I volunteered to be the list admins. So here we are. My personal idea about this list is that it could be a useful channel for: - announcing and discussing Lisp user group meetings that are taking place everywhere in Europe - announcing and discussing Lisp-related jobs, courses and anything else that may require face-to-face contact with Lispers 'in the neighbourhood' (as in "not more than a couple of hours by car, train or plane") - talking about Lisp with people you may have actually met in real life instead of just a bunch of strangers from all over the world. But these are just my own ideas. I'd be interested in hearing yours as well. Arthur P.S. About using languages other than English: we've been discussing this briefly on the Cologne mailing list, and even on that list we already had diverging opinions. Personally, I love all kinds of language and all kinds of languages and I think it's fine if people use French, Finnish or even Dutch on this list. But I expect that not everybody will agree and we'll probably never reach a consensus on this. I suggest that we just wait and see what happens before making a problem out of this.
