How does a breakout group work?
You can find a description of the idea in the call for papers for the Lisp workshop. See http://lisp-ecoop05.bknr.net/cfp The basic idea is very simple: define a topic that you want to work on, and break out from the workshop (or whatever event) to meet in small groups to focus on just that topic and nothing else.
