The 0.2.7 release has quite a few changes, so there might be a few bugs left that I haven't caught. Some new things are: plugin interface--anyone can add modules and backends by dropping a .lisp file into the plugin directory (and putting a deffomusplugin declaration at the top of the file)--this will make it easier to experiment w/ different algorithms while not breaking the main program. Also, plugins load only on demand. Kilian's note-speller (:nokey2) is the first one (use it by making sure you can load the "iterate" common-lisp package with ASDF and supplying the setting ":auto-accs-mod :nokey2"). Get a plugin listing w/ LIST-FOMUS-PLUGINS (only the ones that compile successfully are listed). REGISTER-FOMUS-PLUGIN and LOAD-FOMUS-PLUGIN aren't normally necessary, but they're there for testing/debugging, etc.. Improved the command-line interface a bit--there was a bug mentioned earlier on this list which I'm not sure I fixed... but nonetheless several other bugs were fixed. More useful switches were added for controlling output (type "fomus" by itself after it has been installed to see them). It should also work with CLISP now (I tested this on Linux but not Windows). Also, fomus is a bit more informative when reporting errors in text files (gives the "entry" number and prints the line out) Added some initial support for "chunks," which allow the user to process separate sections of the score (either time-wise or part-wise) and "merge" them together. Parts are merged if they have the same part ID or added to the score if their IDs are unique. Right now overlapping measures that both contain notes can't be merged--measures are merged only if one contains notes and all others overlapping at that location contain rests. This definitely still needs some work done on it. Key signatures are almost there (I've been procrastinating on this feature)--eventually the note speller will take these into account (and caut. accidentals will be correct) Don't know why fomus runs 10x slower in OpenMCL (I timed it & compared it w/ SBCL--OpenMCL is amazingly slower for some reason)--I'll have to do some profiling Added some more text input examples (+ Rob Canning's--thanks) Thanks to everyone for your help -David

[fomus-devel] Installation problem: fomus commandline application

Dear all, I am new to this list and did not find my problem discussed already. Apologies if if this is a FAQ. I tried to install the fomus commandline application, without success so far. It appears the compilation finishes successfully, then a Fomus greating message appears which ends up in the debugger. I get an error message which reads something like the following (copied by hand, hopefully without typos..) debugger invoked on an END-OF-FILE in thread 8843: end of file on #<SB-IMPL::STRING-INPUT-STREAM {9734081}> <snipped> (SB-IMPL::STRING-INCH 3 #<SB-IMPL:: STRING-INPUT-STREAM {some number}> T NIL)[:EXTERNAL] I tried Fomus 0.2.6 with SBCL 0.8.16 and a CMUCL snapshot from 2004 -- all on Linux (Fedora Core 3). [Apologies for multiple postings] Strasheela is a highly expressive constraint-based music composition system. Users declaratively state a music theory and the computer generates music which complies with this theory. A theory is formulated as a constraint satisfaction problem (CSP) by a set of rules (constraints) applied to a music representation in which some aspects are expressed by variables (unknowns). Music constraint programming is style-independent and is well-suited for highly complex theories (e.g. a fully-fledged theory of harmony). Results can be output into various formats including MIDI, Lilypond, and Csound. The installation instructions and other documentation have been revised. Dear Torsten, you tried it with sbcl and cmucl and get basically the same error? For the sbcl case - maybe it would be good just to try with 0.9.16 ? Just to be sure: You are invoking it with $ ./install.sh --sbcl (no other options?) A friend of mine had a problem _using_ the fomus cmdline app... The error message was similar (if I remember correctly). It showed up, that the encoding of his text input file was unicode.... Changing it to Latin-1 made it work! There is even a 0.9.16 binary release available on http://sbcl.sourceforge.net/platform-table.html, so again, its probably best to try that. Have you successfully compiled and used fomus from the Lisp REPL? Hope that helps somehow, if not, I am sure that David will now, but he might need a longer backtrace then... ;-) Cheers, Kilian

hello, i have just found fomus! this is exactly what i have been looking for - many thanks for your work. i am currently working on a genetic algorithm music composition software in pure-data and have been struggling trying to convert my data into lilypond format. perhaps with fomus this will no longer be a problem for me. i have been looking at the examples and have the following question/request: i will be using fomus in text interface mode and would love to see some examples which include data other than pitch duration and onset just so i can get an idea of how my data should be formatted. note 1 :off 0 :dur 1 :note 60 :mark attack :dynamic ppp note 1 :off 1 :dur 1 :note 62 :mark staccato :dynamic fff i know this is wrong but i would like to know the right way to include articulation and dynamic material for example. Hi, I've just set up fomus on cygwin (clisp, cm) but I'm having a little trouble getting it working. I'm just trying the first example in the docs as listed below but I get an error message: "*** - -: NIL is not a number". I know this is a pretty common Lisp error (excuse the unintentional pun!) but I'm not sure where I should be looking to resolve it. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated. Hi David, Thanks for getting FOMUS to work in Clisp. It does indeed run in Windows too. By that I mean that this works: (events (new seq :subobjects (list (new midi :time 0))) "test.xml") and the resulting file is readable by Finale. Since I don't really know how to use FOMUS (yet), I wanted to run the test-suite, but it can't load and gives this: *** - component :CL-PPCRE not found, required by #<SYSTEM "fomus-test" #x1A2B7449> Regarding nested tuplets, yes, ETF format can represent them. CM-ETF can output them too, but that feature is mostly useless right now, because the OpenMusic algorithm used to convert raw durations to an abstract notational representation (a "tree"), seems to never produce nested tuplets. For example, rather than a triplet within a triplet, it just uses the common denominator for the whole structure instead; i.e. as a nine-tuplet instead. I assume the fomus algorithm can produce nested tuplets? Just to prove to myself that CM-ETF *can* do nested tuplets I tried this: (cm-etf::meta->etf '(((4 4)) (TREBLE ((Q NIL NIL ((3 Q 1 H) (3 H 1 W)) NIL ((CM::C4 NIL))) (Q NIL NIL NIL NIL ((CM::C4 NIL))) (Q NIL NIL NIL NIL ((CM::C4 NIL))) (H NIL NIL NIL NIL ((CM::C4 NIL))) (H NIL NIL NIL NIL ((CM::C4 NIL))))))) The resulting file shows the nested tuplets in Finale and Sibelius. I'll write a prettier function that lets the user output an ETF from a tree and chord-list; it won't be hard. By all means, use the code in CM-ETF however you wish, and take whatever is useful for the FOMUS backend. All data is represented as lists so if you rip things apart, you won't have trouble with undefined objects. If you have any questions about it, ask away. I might be able to help by figuring out the ETF format for articulations and expressions. For the long term, you may want to consider making FOMUS compatible with OpenMusic, especially since IRCAM plans to release a free version for SBCL on Linux. They don't have .ly or .xml support. Hi all... I was looking around to see if there was a more appropriate place to post a questions / problem. If this is the wrong list, I apologize and would appreciate a re-direct. If not, here is the problem I am having. In LilyPond, I get an error: Parsing...ERROR: Unbound variable: def-music-function I am starting out with both LilyPond and FOMUS... any suggestions on how to get rid of the error, or solve it either on the FOMUS or LilyPond side? Second, is there a variable on the lisp side to change the LilyPond version number? FOMUS can't detect my OSX .app version (2.8)... I'm hand changing it for now, and that seems to be fine, but it would be nice if this is something I can change in the .fomus file. Also, for simple tests, I can delete the beamL (etc.) definitions and the code will compile, but once those vars are used in the .ly file, there are (of course) problems. Thanks for any help.
