[Gsll-devel] nonlinear fit test

I am trying to run gsll on clisp which is running on cygwin & windows. It compiles and loads OK. I am trying to run the nonlinear fit example, and following the instructions in the comments at the end of the file. > (nlls-setup) ;works OK > (solve-nonlinear-least-squares-example) gives an error: FFI::FOREIGN-CALL-OUT: 0 connot be converted to foreign type DOUBLE-FLOAT. By commenting out pieces of the code, it looks that the statement ...(fit (nonlinear-fdffit *levenberg-marquardt* *number-of-observations* *number-of-parameters* exponential-residual init)) ... is the one that causes the error. I was unable to dig deeper. Any thoughts where the problem may be? Thanks, Mirko

[Gsll-devel] closure out of letm

Hi, I am trying to create a function that would return another function that generates draws from a beta distribution. Something like this: (defun make-beta-generator (a b) (letm ((rng (random-number-generator *mt19937* 0))) (lambda () ;; of course this won't work, letm deallocated rng (beta-rd rng a b)))) As the comment says, this does not work. Is there a way to prevent letm from deallocating rng (or achieve the effect I want by some other means)? Thanks, Tamas

[Gsll-devel] Using the numerical differentiation functions

Hey Liam et al. I wanted to use the numerical differentiation functions of GSL (specifically gsl_deriv_central or the GSLL equiv CENTRAL-DERIVATIVE). Does anyone have some examples of it's usage? i have tried this with my home brewed GSL bindings. However, it is a bit trickier than most stuff I have played with since it involves a callback function. The callback must be placed in a slot of a gsl_function object. Both of these steps seem trivial enough, but I am getting some memory error that I am having trouble debugging (bringing back old nightmares of C). Anyway, thanks for reading, Zach

Liam, here is an example of use of gsll. I use the lu matrix solvers to calculate the radiative heat flux between three infinite parallel plates. This function takes advantage of letm to return a *closure* that contains several solutions to the problem. To access the results of the calculation do the following > (funcall *closure* args) where args is one of :mat, :per, :rhs, :q1, :fluxes There are probably other ways of accomplishing similar things (like values) but I like closure because it provides permanence to the calculation until I decide to discard it. The code is not super-clean. I wrote it a month or two back, and there is some bit-rot in it. You can see that I had to use the data statement to revive the data. Otherwise, the closure was not able to access them. It is for this reason that I asked if we could have letm not destroying by default all of its contents, but saving some for closure use. One could label such variables with a special symbol (like !S like foo!S, which the macro would detect and then decide whether to save or not). I asked on the help-gsl mailing list, and the status of the matrix exponential is that, while present in GSL, it is "not supported" due to lack of testing. If you would like to take up the issue of how to get it supported, I suggest you send email to the help-gsl list. Hello folks (the following is not a showstopper, but I am just curious). I am trying to define a closure (still doing LU decompositions and matrix solutions), and would like to keep some of the variables around for further processing. But the code for letm mentions some "freers", which gave me hope that I can specify the freer as NIL. But I could not figure that one out quite yet. Got it. Indeed, it works fine. In my lisp code this message implies a conceptual or programming error. So, I always try eliminate it. Thus the knee-jerk reaction. Hello Liam (& others) I am using SBCL 1.014 and GSL with a timestamp from march of this year. I am trying to use the lu.lisp library and cannot compile the invert-matrix example. The error message is "deleting unreachable code" at the (letm. If I comment out the calls to lu-... and (data-inv) and do instead (data mmat), then it will compile. I am including the transcript at the end of this message. Any clue as to what could be wrong?
