This is David O'Toole and this is my third attempt to send this message to this mailing list that I am supposedly an admin of. My normal email address dto(a)ioforms.org appears to have been blacklisted despite that address being listed as an admin for the list and coming from Networksolutions. I also found myself unable to post to the boston-lisp list a while back, but that was with my old email address. In response to my announcement of the upcoming presentation on the boston-lisp list, I received some off-list responses from a list member. I believed these emails to be suspicious because: 1. They contained what seemed to be confidential information about a Lisp company, but were sent from one gmail account (his) to another (mine). 2. The sender repeatedly expressed interest in my work and goals and seemed to want a lot of information about me, but also seemed to omit information that I openly expressed interest in (i.e. the software patent linked to on the page.) and, 3. The first email contained an offer to meet me in person, but I could not verify the identity of the other Gmailer. I very quickly found myself a difficult position: who I was really talking to, and why exactly should I be giving out the requested information? Wasn't there already a shitload of information online about my beliefs and my projects? Why would it be necessary to meet in person? Will OTHERS be contacted and be placed in similar predicaments? If secret research (or at least unethical patent trolling) is indeed involved, then you have a right to know. The Lisp community taught me how to finally program effectively after years of frustration with other languages; I could hardly return the favor by simply sitting on information that I believe could help other Lispers make a more informed decision. So, rather than try to puzzle it out in the dark and just hope that no one else in Lispgames would find themselves "probed" in this potentially fraudulent manner, I posted the entire email thread so that people could decide for themselves, and then contacted several people who I consider to be experts in order to seek advice on my situation. Thanks to the all-pervading and insecure computer networks that we (inexplicably) still depend on for everything, we live in a moment of supreme civilizational paranoia. The trials and tribulations of US defense contractors like HBGary provide a case in point. We have seen an upswing in the harassment and even arrest of programmers around the world. Instead of "you're just being paranoid, David", my various inquiries led me to believe that my unease about these emails had been justified at least in part. The appearance of a portion of the email exchange on Cryptome, along with part of a subsequent and related email train, may yet make me the subject of a reprisal. (Just visit the EFF website if you think programmers don't get harassed for silly shit.) This is why I shut down all my sites and canceled my Google account- -- taking my gmail, youtube account, and blogger blog with it. I then lived in total misery while I tried to figure out how to proceed, wishing I'd never received those emails. But someone convinced me that hiding my work would not be productive. So, after taking a number of steps to protect myself, I've brought back much of my web presence (on different servers that I pay for) and have resolved to continue Blocky development in the open. I would much rather have given my exciting presentation at BLM than have gone through this miserable episode. But that's life. I just want everyone to know what happened, and that I have a hunch that the uptick in the perceived value of Lisp technology might draw unsuspecting Lispers into the global tech chess game. Wait, isn't Lisp great for winning games like that?

You may wish to be careful in discussing Lisp with people who are (or claim to be) former contractors for the US Department of Defense, and I urge you protect yourselves and to do your own research. I've been invited to give another presentation to the Boston Lisp group on the topic of lisp games, possibly in late August or September. I'd love to spend some time talking about what the community at large are doing, and it's been a while since we've had a game jam, so how about it? What are your thoughts? The month-long "expo" format can allow for more participation, since it doesn't rely on everyone having the same week free to work on an entry. Here is last year's call for entries: http://dto.github.com/notebook/2010expo.html I'd also like to try promoting the contest to a somewhat wider audience with a little viral ad banner campaign or something. Plus, I think we can appeal to Lisp newcomers and novices by pointing to appealing stuff like SchemeBricks and Fluxus. It's arguably a bit more of a turn-key solution, and people are doing a lot of fun games and gamelike things with Fluxus. It would be fantastic also if the developers of various Lisp game libraries and tools could provide links to documentation for newcomers, so that the 2011 expo page will present both expo newcomers and returning entrants with a variety of options for doing something lispy with games.

dear Lispers and dear game-devs, I'm working on a project to make games on Lisp for smartphones. I'm writing to let you all know of this project. If someone is interested, please let me know, so we can advance the project faster and make better code. The project works using ECL, which has being ported to Android and iOS thanks to the work of Ram Krishnan and Sylvain Ageneau. Right now, you can start ECL on these devices, load and execute any Lisp code. As an example, which is included in the project, you can run a Swank server on the devices, and connect to it from Slime. I'm starting from those projects and I'm attempting to make the connections necessary for making games. My first target is Android. Right now, Lisp can communicate with OpenGL (but there are some crashes...), and Java can communicate touch events to Lisp. The first goal is to be able to draw OpenGL primitives (without crashing), draw textures, and output sound. The second goal is to build the same connections for iOS. The third goal, for the remote future, is to have internet connections. And the fourth goal, for an even farther future, is to read gyroscopes data and GPS data. This project is not aiming at making a Lisp game engine. That is left as an exercise for the developer. But with all the connections there, making your game/engine should be easier. Also, since this project is aiming at releasing games through the App Store, it cannot contain any GPL software. All my work is on the public domain (as in "yes, you can go, use it, make money, and never tell me"). ECL is released under the LGPL license, so there should be no problems if you fulfill your responsibilities. [lisp-game-dev] Announcing Blackthorn 3D, a new game engine for Common Lisp

Hi everyone, This spring I was lucky enough to be able to spend time working on something I've wanted to do for a long time--work on a full-blown 3D game engine in Common Lisp. As a part of CSE 125 at UCSD <http://pisa.ucsd.edu/cse125/> (a senior design project course in video game), I worked a team with 4 other people to create a 3D multiplayer video game in 10 weeks. The result is Blackthorn 3D, and an accompanying demo game named LKCAS. The game engine uses cl-opengl (with lispbuilder-sdl) for graphics, and supports particle effects, portals, skinning and animation (with a loader for the Collada <http://www.collada.org/> format). The custom-built, pure-CL physics engine has support for swept sphere collisions against the static environment, allowing us to do things like have the players walk on all the walls in our levels. The network code was written with usocket and userial, and easily supports 4 players over a LAN, or even over the internet (albeit with the latency of your connection). Not too long ago, I ran across David's blog(http://lispgamesdev.blogspot.com/), more specifically the post on using org-babel for Literate Programming (http://lispgamesdev.blogspot.com/2010/07/literate-programming-with-common-l…) My first thought was "Oh man, I've gotta try this," and with a little time and frustration, I got org-babel working decently well. The game I'm working on right now is using org-babel, and I'm starting to like it, though there are still a few things that I want to change/add/mess with when I have time for it. So I have an open question: Has anyone else used org-babel to write code with? What have been your experiences with it? (commentary, tips, tricks, additions you've made, etc. would be nice to hear :) And to David directly: Are you still using org-babel since that last post? - Tyler
