[LispSea] status of planning the first meeting
Our first meeting will be in mid-to-late July. Details on the legwork: A big part of this group is to meet and have some element of an interactive session such as a demonstration or live tutorial. My first pick for location was a classroom at Seattle Central Community College. Some rooms are equipped with video projectors, and these may be reserved-- ordinarily. Currently, however, SCCC is deep into rather massive renovations, so this may not work until autumn. My second pick was a meeting room at the Capitol Hill branch of the Seattle Public Library (which was rebuilt a couple of years ago and is rather nice). For this location, however, we must provide our own projector. Unless someone has a projector, I'll arrange to get one. Suggestions for alternate locations are welcome. Drawing upon prior experiences, these types of events seem to draw a slightly larger crowd when there's free food (such as pizza) and zero cost to attend. I'm working on all these factors, so that's what's taking time. Once we get the first couple of meetings behind us, subsequent sessions will happen more gracefully. As there's a national holiday in early July and many people take vacations around then, the meeting would be best towards the latter part of the month. While I realize that puts it a month out, it's actually not that far away. That's the update. Thanks for your patience, and thanks for participating! -Daniel PS - I'll send a separate call for planning the exact day as that time approaches.

Hey what do pizzas cost anyways, en masse? I'm curious about the relative business expense. Maybe there's a cheaper way to go that still works. Depends on how many people are expected. Also on whether anyone has time and skill to cook. I think a big pot of vegetarian chili could go a long ways price / performance wise. Beans are cheap. I've also discovered recently that soybeans in the pod are rather tasty and a pretty good mental boost. Anyone got a Costco or Sam's Club membership? One sore point with me is the number of times I've been to a meeting and only caffeinated beverages were available. Considering that half the time they punch holes in my stomach... No.
A card-carrying member of the NRCHA! (National Rotten Chili Haters Association) I think there's a serious YMMV on beans giving people gas, especially when combined with other proteins. Well, it's one idea out of several bulk foods possibilities. My original question was: how much do pizzas cost? My 2nd question is: where's the money coming from? If it's just out of a few organizers' pockets, and there's no generous corporate benefactor involved, I think we should be considering our cost-effective creativity. Also, that way of doing it has the advantage of not needing a benefactor, if those are difficult to obtain. I don't know, I've never tried, nor would I likely invest my own organizational energies that way. No I'm not in Yakima. Yes I made $400 on signatures in Marysville yesterday. Yes I'm going to Yakima today. I'll be back on Tuesday to rattle at y'all some more. Cheers, Brandon Van Every
Brandon: No potlucks! On further thought, since we'll be meeting on Capitol Hill initially, people will have easy access to a wide variety of food before/after the meetings. Other groups such as Sputnik-- game developers on the East Side-- need to provide food since there are far fewer meal options. -Daniel
