Looks like macroexpand and other uses of eval-string don't read in the right package. BTW, I've run into a limitation of the current multiprocessing scheme. E.g. if you have a single repl that is busy then you can't meta-point or macroexpand. Was the creation of a dedicated control stream considered and rejected? It would be useful to have a guaranteed connection from emacs to the lisp - another use would be to have the control stream use process-interrupt instead of relying on sigint getting to the correct thread. -Alan

i have a few openmcl patches that i've been sitting on waiting to see what the stateless-emacs did to the api. 1) update some defimplementation vs. defslimefun in swank-openmcl 2) implement compile-system-for-emacs 3) don't rebind print-level or print-length in apply-macro-expander. Unless there's some reason why i shouldn't i'll finally use my commit rights and apply the first two. before applying the third i'd like someone to tell my why those variabels should be re-bound when macroexpanding. p.s. the very recently commited state-less emacs works (afaict) on an inferior (as opposed to remote) openmcl 0.14-031220. -- Marco Ring the bells that still can ring. I am not absolutely sure yet i think that it is impossible to connect to a swank server running not on a "localhost". All of the functions that should be taking a host as a parameter are using "localhost" instead of host. Is it a feature or a bug ? Ignas Mikalajunas

Hi, Attached is a patch which defines and implements (for SBCL and CMUCL) a basic profiling interface for SLIME. Profiling submenu and following key combos added: C-c p {t,u,f,r,c} The CMUCL implementation is not tested, since my swank-cmucl.lisp does not compile currently, but it is written according to docs. Hi, I hacked up something similar to ILISP's C-z P (SET-PACKAGE-LISP). I am not at all sure whether this is the right way to do it, but it seems to work. It evolved by trial and error, though. C-c M-p would be a key binding candidate, I guess. And it probably should go into the menu as well. As an aside: it would be extremely helpful if SLIME and SWANK functions would be properly documented. Cheers, Michael

Hi, HYPERSPEC-LOOKUP from slime's hyperspec.el copies the emacs text properties when getting the symbol to lookup. When called at a new slime-repl prompt, the prompt is taken as symbol to lookup (since there is nothing else). But the slime-repl prompt has property read-only and thus it cannot be edited at the HYPERSPEC-LOOKUP prompt in the minibuffer, to enter the right symbol for lookup. * to reproduce: M-x slime M-x hyperspec-lookup ; try to edit the "CL-USER>", emacs will beep and whine that it is ; read-only. * software: + Latest SLIME + GNU/Emacs 21.3.50.1 * fix: Drop text-properties when getting symbol at point. when using asdf to load swank the file swank-loader.lisp is compilied, however this file contains a symbol in the swank package, which is fine when the file is loaded but is an error when the file is compiled before the rest of swank has been loaded, which is what asdf tries to do when loading the swank system. anyway, attached is a new swank.asd which contains all the dependencies in swank-loader and can be loaded from a non-emacs staret lisp image. since i'm going to assume swank.asd will be used by programs and not by users (via emacs) this asdf doesn't load the user's init file. -- Marco Ring the bells that still can ring. [slime-devel] slime-input-stream and REPL extensions

Would it be possible to change `slime-input-stream' to become a real stream rather than just a struct? As a non-stream struct it tends to wreak havoc when some non-slime aware code tries to operate on *standard-input*. My concrete problem is with Paul Foleys (mycroft(a)actrix.gen.nz) repl-ext package that allows one to do Allegro style repl commands, and I have come to absolutely love this. This wants to replace the toplevel REPL but does not know how to handle slime-input-streams. The fix is rather simple, but I think it would make slime more robust if it would not be necessary to fix all packages that needs to operate on *standard-input* one by one. [slime-devel] Remote slime

I'm trying to use slime (FAIRLY_STABLE) through a somewhat fragile collection of ssh pipes. I'm forwarding local port 12321 through to the remote swank server. I can connect to it manually fine, and see a "slime-open-stream-to-lisp" message. However, when I try to connect to it with emacs (C-u M-x slime-connect localhost 12321), it fails: 'error in process filter: make client process failed: connection refused, :name, *lisp-output-stream*, :buffer, nil, :host, localhost, :service, 32848' I'm pretty sure I have gotten this to work in the past. I thought slime only used one connection. Has this changed? I've been out of the loop for a while, but I didn't ask it to use a port 32848 above. Is there a way to use it in a single connection mode? I'm trying to work on a web application remotely, and I don't wish to expose the machine directly, and would really not like to set up a full VPN if I can help it. On a peripherally related note, is there any sort of support for a translation table for pathnames? I'd like to edit the remote files with tramp mode, but if the paths get sent over as "/multi:ssh:foo@bar.quux:ssh:foo@gronk:/baz" it's not going to like it too much. :) -bcd -- *** Brian Downing <bdowning at lavos dot net>

openmcl (perhaps others) needs to add connection streams to a list to be periodically flushed so that output appears in emacs in a timely manner. I could redefine or advise create-connection and close-connection but I think it might make more sense to make these methods and then I can define :around methods to do what needs to be done. Or you could add a hook. Or is there some better place to do this. -Alan

when using the latest slime on OpenMCL is was successfully able to start and use slime, however executinng (asdf:oos 'asdf:load-op :swank) failed on errors regarding the redefinition of generic functions as "regular" functions. namely all of those functions defined via definterface in swank-backend which were then defined via defslimefun or defslimefun-unimplemented in swank-openmcl.lisp (which makes sense considering how these macro are defiened). what still seems odd is that M-x slime was able to successfully compile and load everything. anyway, if someone hasn't already done this i can send a simple patch which removes the incorrect forms and updates swank-openmcl to use defimplementation where approriate. -- Marco Ring the bells that still can ring.
