[slime-devel] comma shortcut doesn't work always

Another minor glitch that I encountered is that the comma shortcut in the REPL doesn't always work. I can consistently reproduce it (GNU Emacs 21.3.50 and also 21.3 release) like this: 1. Make sure point is at the beginning of a REPL input line. 2. Split Emacs frame into two windows, one of them being the REPL the other one containing something else. 3. Hide REPL window with C-x 0. 4. Now type M-x slime. 5. Type the comma. At this point I'm not asked for a shortcut command in the minibuffer but the comma is simply entered into the REPL instead. Anybody else seeing this? I have had a look at all of the DEFSLIMEFUN's that were modified since 4/18 (the previous CVS version that I had which was working ok with CLISP) and haven't found any obvious clues. Any suggestions on how I might debug this issue as it occurs at startup during the slime-connect processing in Emacs (after CLISP has started up successfully)? - Bill

[slime-devel] M-p/M-n doesn't move to the note in cvs slime and xemacs

After updating slime to the CVS slime version of 2005-05-16 to get the GC message changes, I notice that M-p/M-n no longer seems to move the the previous/next compiler note when in the Lisp buffer. The compiler notes seem to be highlighted correctly, but M-p/M-n always say no next note. This is with cmucl 2005-05 snapshot, and xemacs 21.5-b20. This combination with slime from Feb or so was working just fine. I can look into this if someone gives a few pointers on where to look. Thanks, Ray

Dumb question number two for today: I've recently switched to a CVS build (circa end of January) of GNU Emacs on Windows. Now, if I have a function like this in a lisp mode buffer (defun foo () "This is a very very very very very very very very very very very very long comment line." (bar x)) and press M-q within the comment string the result looks like so: (defun foo () "This is a very very very very very very very very very very very very long comment line." (bar x)) However, in 21.3 the result looked like this (defun foo () "This is a very very very very very very very very very very very very long comment line." (bar x)) which is what I prefer. Is this a bug or can the behaviour be changed with some setting that I'm missing? Thanks, Edi.

After much sweat and cursing, I now have SLIME working on Corman Lisp (only tested on 2.51). I've attached the necessary swank-corman.lisp as well as a patch against CVS HEAD. I actually had this working back in December, but due to a lack of round tuits I haven't made it official before. I've recently noticed that when I do a ,load-system and Emacs offers to save modified files, it complains about the files being locked by another process and asking if I want to steal the lock etc. However the PID it gives is in fact my Emacs process. Development environments such as Slime benefit from being able attach additional source location information (eg. buffer associations) to functions. Currently Slime does this by patching SBCL in order to be able to attach its own plists to SB-C::DEBUG-SOURCE structures. I propose we add :SOURCE-PLIST option to WITH-COMPILATION-UNIT, with the following tentative spec: :SOURCE-PLIST Plist-Form Attaches the value returned by the Plist-Form to internal source location information of functions and definitions compiled in within the dynamic contour. Primarily for use by development environments, in order to eg. associate function definitions with editor-buffers. Can be accessed as SB-INTROSPECT:DEFINITION-SOURCE-PLIST. If multiple, nested WITH-COMPILATION-UNITs provide :SOURCE-PLISTs, they are appended togather, innermost left, unless :OVERRIDE is true, in which case previous :SOURCE-PLISTs are ignored. The space-costs of this are nominal: size of DEBUG-SOURCE structures is increased by one slot/word, but there is only one of those per compiled file -- though one per function loaded from source or entered at the toplevel. I think calling it a :SOURCE-PLIST is a reasonable compromise between more abstract names such as :INFO, the documentary nature of the -PLIST vrt. the appending behaviour, by YMMW. To illustrate the usage, the significant part of SWANK-COMPILE-STRING[*] could eg. become (with-compilation-unit (:source-plist (list 'emacs-buffer buffer 'emacs-string string 'emacs-position position)) (with-input-from-string (s string) (load s)))))) I've the SBCL parts of this implemented in my local tree, and most of swank-sbcl adapted for this. The questions to SBCL and Slime folks respectively: 1. Does the interface seem sane and something we would be happy to support? Are the non-slime use cases this doesn't reasonably cover? 2. Does this fit the needs of Slime? If this existed on other platforms as well, would you be tempted to use this instead of whatever you currently use? [slime-devel] updating slime during idle time

Hi Slimers, I've recently started running slime with clisp on windows. This works great for most things, but now I'm starting to do windows gui programming, and windows wants each program to have it's own event loop, which interferes with slime, which has its own server update loop. Unfortunately, clisp is single threaded, so I can only update windows events or update slime requests at a given time. Is there a function I can call periodically to process slime requests at idle time? Or alternately, can I add a hook to swank so I can pump windows events when slime isn't processing anything? Hi, When I compile a buffer I often get an error message like this: -+ Errors (1) `-- Read error in form starting at 3192: ";; (list `(:p :class "small"" End-of-File on #<Stream for file "/home/jcunningham/code/lisp/html/test.lisp"> [+] Notes (2) My question is: is there a way (key-code maybe?) to find that start point in the file? Is there some way to get at least a line number? I've looked through some of the documents and googled a bit but haven't come up with anything yet. Couple more developments: Now check that we are writing to a slime stream (or an pretty-printer stream that directs to a slime stream) before presenting. This should ensure that you don't land up with the in-band messages in places you didn't intend to, at the expense of possibly missing presentations if you direct your io to slime via some wrapping stream. (but you can specialize slime-stream-p for that stream, if you are motivated) First readable object : pathnames are now presented. E.g. load file (when *load-verbose* t) log message has sensitive pathname. Check out the menu (right click). Turn that off by setting *enable-presenting-readable-objects* nil You still have to explicitly load present.lisp. Please do. Unless there are objections I'll probably make this the default in a few days. Couple of more notes in the ChangeLog To do: - Make it work for non-dedicated-stream - When you copy the text of just a portion of a presentation with meta-w, remove the text properties. - Properly factor for swank.lisp, swank-backend, and lisp specific portions. - boxed text for multiple lines is ugly (lispms boxed the outside of all the text - emacs boxes each line). So see if there is a way to get nicer behavior, or consider changing default mouseover style. - Maybe replace x-popup-menu with menu-keymaps (volunteers welcome) - Assuming presenting readable objects doesn't cause problems, decide what other objects should so be printed - next candidate: structures. - Try to implement nested presentations. Hi, I have a weird problem with Emacs, and it apparently started around the same time I started using Slime. I hadn't been coding for a few months and didn't notice that the simple filename.~N~ emacs backups had stopped working....sometimes. After disabling various features in .emacs (or default.el), it doesn't seem to be slime related, but the time history matches up. After a week of guessing, I thought that maybe the emacs wizards here might have some better guesses. Some facts: With the root user, ~N~ backups are fine, regardless of the file ext. With the lisp user (I have one username exclusively for lisp work), ~N~ backups work on everything but .lisp files. So the version control settings would seem to be active, and testing in a *scratch* emacs buffer shows expected values. .default.el: ; version control settings (setq backup-by-copying t backup-directory-alist '(("." . I tried FAIRLY-STABLE this morning, and had some problems: In swank-sbcl.lisp preferred-communication-style there were complaints that the linux_no_threads_p symbol was undefined. I'm using SBCL 0.8.16, Linux 2.6.11.6, and glibc 2.3.2. (Unconditionally returning :spawn works.) In swank.lisp clear-repl-results, there seems to be one superflous closing parenthesis.

Hi, I made a quick hack that allows the Slime listener to use Lisp objects that were returned from the Common Lisp environment. We already can do this using *, **, and *** variables but, to me, is not enough. I have an hard time remembering the number of stars that I should write and, moreover, I prefer to 'point' to a value that is presented in the listener and I use it in the construction of next expression, just like in Symbolics Lisp machines. For those who never saw the Symbolics environment, let me give you a description of what I can do with this patch to Slime: CL-USER> (cons 1 2) (1 . 2) ;;this is just like in good old Slime CL-USER> (cons (1 . 2) (1 . 2)) ;; something new: I wrote "(cons " ;;and then I moved the cursor to the previous line and pressed return. ;;The previous output is copied to the current prompt but, in fact, it's ;;not only text. It also represents the previous value returned by the ;;environment. In this example I did the same operation twice and then I wrote the closing ")". The result, as expected, is: ((1 . 2) 1 . 2) CL-USER> (eq (car ((1 . 2) 1 . 2)) (cdr ((1 . 2) 1 . 2))) ;;again, I wrote "(eq (car " and then I copied the previous output (using return). Then, I wrote ") (cdr " and I copied again the previous output. After finishing the form (with "))"), the environment returns: T ;;as expected. You cannot see it in this email (I presume) but I also mark the reused values in a different color and I make then read-only (in Emacs) so that you can see that they are a different beast. Another interesting extension is to directly inspect any returned value. I changed the inspect command so that, whenever the cursor is over a returned value, C-cC-I automatically inspects it. There are lots of other things that we can do like discovering the types of the presented values and restrict their use for certain operations. For example, if there's a function that asks the user for a number, we can allow him to reuse old values as long as they are of type number. In short, this is just a quick hack to provide a stripped down version of presentation types that works with emacs. I guess that the edit-value feature of Slime could also be rewritten to take advantage of this stuff. Now, it should be obvious that I am keeping all the returned values in the Common Lisp side for further use. This means that they are not GCed. So, from time to time, it might be wise to clean the Listener (just like before, with C-cC-t) or just the previous output (with C-cC-o). This also releases the corresponding objects from the Common Lisp side. I suggest you try it out. If the Slime team thinks this is useful then I suggest that you take a good look at the code (as you usually do :-) and refactor it radically because I did a lot of copy&paste just to test the idea. And it might also contains lots of bugs :-) There are also lots of improvements that can be done like not storing the values that don't require identity preservation (like small numbers, and characters), like providing the functions that allow the type of a value to be returned (e.g., to provide a menu of operations for the object, etc), like allowing parts of lists to be reuse (this one seems easy but requires different conventions for the gestures needed for reusing previous values), etc, etc. Best regards, António Leitão. [slime-devel] slime & xemacs troubles in OS X 10.4

I recently updated to OS X 10.4 and both xemacs and slime stopped working. I've tracked down my troubles and thought I would pass them along in the hopes of saving someone else trouble. The first problem was that xemacs (21.4.17) would exit during startup. The 10.4 X11 implementation does not like this: device-x.c line 505: /* Get a dll handle to the main process. */ dll_handle xaw_dll_handle = dll_open (NULL); To fix, change to: /* Get a dll handle to the main process. */ dll_handle xaw_dll_handle = dll_open (""); After I got xemacs working, slime failed at startup with: itimer "run-with-timer" signaled: (error "127.0.0.1/\220^YFe No address associated with nodename") The backend lisp starts correctly and writes the handshake data correctly, but xemacs cannot resolve the local host to finish the connection. This appears to be a compiler issue with gcc in 10.4, if you configure xemacs with: ./configure --cflags="-g" Slime will once again be able to connect. James M
