[slime-devel] Standard output no longer appears in REPL

It's been a couple of months since I last used SLIME. Today I noticed that when I evaluate expressions in the REPL that write to *standard-output*, the output appears in the *inferior-lisp* buffer, but not in the REPL as it used to. I'm using GNU Emacs on Windows atop the CLISP Cygwin build. SLIME is up to date with CVS. Is there some new configuration required to restore the old behavior with output streams feeding into the REPL output? -- Steven E. Harris

Hello Attached is a hack based on the code that indents LOOP (in contrib/slime-indentation.el) to indent IF*. I'm aware that few people hack on code with IF* but to them it's quite useful. You need to load the slime-indentation contrib and this file. It does this: (if* (eq t nil) then () () elseif (dsf) thenret x else (balbkj) (sdf)) Yes, that was the spec and the user doc. I have a nasty habit of writing macros with multiple keyword clauses in them--like this: (deffoo foo (stuff) (:bar (a b) (cons a b)) (:zot (a b c) (fii a b c)) (:default 42) (:error (crap))) which of course tend to indent terribly (deffoo foo (stuff) (:bar (a b) (cons a b)) (:zot (a b c) (fii a b c)) (:default 42) (:error (crap))) I've occasionally added special indentation rules for these things in .emacs, but that's no fun at all. I've also sometimes used non-keyword symbols and added global definitions which tell slime how to indent things: (defmacro bar (lambda-list &body body) (error "oops, not in DEFFOO")) None of these is really satisfactory: hacking .emacs means users of a library that has macros with this style don't get the correct indentation in Slime out of the box. Using non-keyword symbols makes the code harder to read. (Keywords make it obvious that those are clauses or options of some sort.) Can someone suggest something better? Cheers, -- Nikodemus

Hi, all, I've been using Slime on top of Franz ACL for quite a while. My experience with Slime is very positive and I like Slime better in every aspects except in following situations. 1. Slime debugger: It prints bunch of Slime (swank: ..... ) related messages that I'm not interested. It's always hard to trying to comb through messages that I'm interested. How can I turn Slime related messages off? 2. While debugging, evaulating expression does not print anything but only the retuned result. Can I have it print to the standard output, i.e., console? 3. Lack of REPL command: Franz Eli supports REPL commands, for example, ":proc" for listing processes, ":pa" to change package and so on. Is there way to add them in? Thank you very much and I appreciate your efforts making Slime the best list-emacs interface. -chris

M-. in slime no longer accepts dspecs other than symbols, since this change: http://bit.ly/dWJiDp I guess that change was made only to accommodate this complaint: http://bit.ly/fZLIxl This breaks two use-cases for me: to find a specific definition in ACL with M-. (method <name> [qualifiers] (<specializers>+)), and to issue swank:ed-in-emacs in certain IDE hooks/wrappers. I can workaround both cases by extracting the `second' from the list recursively until I only have a symbol, and let Slime list me all definitions with that name, but I believe this is sub-optimal when I already know the definition I want. I believe this can happen in other implementations too. Perhaps using a recursive non-interning reader, e.g. stop reading if it cannot find-symbol. Paulo Madeira

[slime-devel] Problem with Slime & SBCL on Windows XP

I've run into a puzzling problem using Slime with SBCL on my Windows XP box. Puzzling in one way, because it seems to work fine on my laptop (also a Windows XP box), but not on my desktop machine -- not that I can see any differences in my set up. I'm running GNU Emacs 23.1.50.1, the latest Slime (3/14), and SBCL 1.0.37 (Win32-x86). My .emacs file looks like this: (setq temporary-file-directory "C:/unzipped/Tmp") (setenv "temp" temporary-file-directory) (setenv "tmp" temporary-file-directory) (setq inferior-lisp-program "sbcl") (add-to-list 'load-path "C:/Slime") (add-to-list 'load-path "C:/Slime/contrib") (require 'slime) (require 'slime-autoloads) (slime-setup '(slime-repl)) I don't have anything in ~/.slime.lisp When I start slime (with M-x slime), the *inferior lisp* buffer comes up and loads a bunch of files (compiling the first time) and ends with: ;; Swank started at port: 2856 CL-USER> As expected. (I'll append the full trace to the bottom of this message.) However, the connection is never made and the *slime-repl* buffer never shows up. A look in *Messages* shows: Connecting to Swank on port 2856.. [2 times] If I try to telnet to that port ("telnet 127.0.0.1 2856") I get "Could not open connection..." If I start SBCL in a separate command shell, I get the same behavior. Appears to start up, but neither Emacs nor telnet can talk to the port. FWIW, I can use slime & CLisp fine on this machine -- so I don't think it's a problem with a firewall blocking the port or something similar. It appears to me that for whatever reason, the swank server is not opening the advertised port. I took a look at the swank code but I didn't see any additional debugging I can turn on. I've done some extensive Googling but can't find any solution. Any ideas what's going on or how to get it working? I'm not a subscriber to this mailing list, so if you can CC me directly in responses it would be appreciated. Hello, I'm a relatively new emacs and SLIME (for lisp) user. I have set up a checked out version (as of a day ago) of SLIME in my emacs and it seems to be working well. However, whenever I use M-. to go to the definition of anything, I get: "No known definition for: <thing-at-point> (in <package-name>)" in the minibuffer. How can I fix this? I don't understand what I have to do to make this work. Thank you. -pete

If I enter (from an italian keyboard) a "small 'a' with grave accent" #\à I get #\LATIN_CAPITAL_LETTER_A_WITH_TILDE which is obviously wrong. I put the following lines in my emacs: (setq inferior-lisp-program "c:/home/bin/clisp/full/lisp.exe -B c:/home/bin/clisp/full -M c:/home/bin/clisp/full/lispinit.mem -E utf-8 -q"); my Lisp system ... [slime-devel] unceasing minibuffer error message after bad input

Hello, I just installed Slime on Mac OSX 10.6, via Quicklisp and sbcl (following instructions here http://www.mohiji.org/2011/01/modern-common-lisp-on-osx/) My emacs has some annoying behavior whenever I do something incorrectly in the SLIME REPL (I'm new at lisp, so this isn't too un...common). For example, it operates fine doing (hello-world) after I've compiled a hello-world defun, but if I try and run it after restarting Slime, it gives me ; SLIME 2011-02-18 CL-USER> (hello-world) ; in: LAMBDA NIL ; (HELLO-WORLD) ; ; caught STYLE-WARNING: ; undefined function: HELLO-WORLD ; ; compilation unit finished ; Undefined function: ; HELLO-WORLD ; caught 1 STYLE-WARNING condition I suspect this is normal. But in the *Messages* buffer, I see things like this: error in process filter: define-key: Wrong type argument: characterp, nil error in process filter: Wrong type argument: characterp, nil error in process filter: define-key: Wrong type argument: characterp, nil error in process filter: Wrong type argument: characterp, nil Mark set Error in post-command-hook: (wrong-type-argument characterp nil) And then it repeats this stuff every once in a while. But even after quitting Slime, whenever I try to switch buffers, or kill buffers, or basically anything, the minibuffer says "Error in post-command-hook: (wrong-type-argument characterp nil)" for a few seconds, then gives me the info I need in the minibuffer (such as the list of buffers to ido-switch to; but it still only lets me input the name of the buffer one letter at a time for some reason). It also won't let me quit Emacs with C-x C-c, or even S-q (Apple-q). I'm not 100% this is from Slime, but it seems that way. Any suggestions for fixing this?
