Hi, Some time ago I could put the point on a function and press Alt-. and slime would take me to the function definition (or a list of possibilities in the case of generics, etc). After one of the updates I did awhile back it stopped working in many circumstances although it contines to work in others. The case it doesn't work in is the one that effects me on a daily basis. Here's two examples: 1. I have a piece of development code with multiple files. The main file loads the other lisp files wherein functions are defined. The only way I can get the operation to work is if I manually compile each function individually. Simply loading the file at any point will reset slime back to not knowing where they are again. 2. Other packages I've written and load through ASD work as they should. I can't see any difference in the way they are constructed. Is there any remedy for this? Proposal: add :host keyword to create-server.

Hello, Currently create-server binds to *loopback-interface* which happens to be "127.0.0.1". BTW: *loopback-interface* is not exported, maybe it should? For remote access binding to the loopback is not really helpful. What about adding a :host keyword to create-server to expose the address we want the server to bind to? I added a patch for your review. The patch is against the latest slime versions available from quicklisp. -Frank

Different behavior: CCL w/SLIME

If I'm in SLIME and I enter (ql:quickload :cl-ppcre) in the REPL I get this error: READ from #<INPUT STRING-INPUT-STREAM>: there is no package with name #1="QL" [Condition of type SYSTEM::SIMPLE-PACKAGE-ERROR] However, if I enter the same in the CCL command line (no SLIME) I get this: [mrice@sabal ~]$ ccl Welcome to Clozure Common Lisp Version 1.9-r15757 (LinuxX8664)! ? (ql:quickload :cl-ppcre) To load "cl-ppcre": Load 1 ASDF system: cl-ppcre ; Loading "cl-ppcre" (:CL-PPCRE) ? Why the difference? I ran a regular expression example from the CCL command line and PPCRE seems to be working OK. What must I do to use Quicklisp from the SLIME REPL? Michael

Hello Helmut, I've recently become aware the slime is now on github, so I downloaded and installed a copy. It ran, but there is a window in my copy of emacs-23.4.1 filled with warnings related to ert.el which indicate that it can't be found. Controlling fasl location

Hello Helmut, I found this link on the slime-developer mailing list and I wondered if it is usable and if so, how would I implement it? I don't have a lot of experience fiddling with slime's internals. http://article.gmane.org/gmane.lisp.slime.devel/8378/match=fasl Is there some other convenient way to set the location for fasl files from within a slime session so that when I do a compile/load, the fasl goes to the same location as the output from asdf. Currently the output from asdf goes to one place, and the output from compile/load goes to my source directory. I'm looking for a simple function call that would pass a pathname or would return to the default if no pathname was passed or maybe just a variable that I can set from within a slime session that would do the job. I only want this to to happen for some projects and not happen for others that don't yet use asdf. Thanks, Paul Bowyer

PATCH: Make slime-snapshot/slime-restore work

Attached patch makes Slime Snapshot contribution work once again. I have tested the following scenarios: 1. M-x slime-snapshot and M-x slime-restore, on a default SBCL build with :spawn communication style 2. Same with dedicated output connection 3. C-u M-x slime-snapshot (saves in the background) 4. Restoring snapshot saved with different value of *use-dedicated-output-stream* 5. Save and restore snapshot without 'slime-repl loaded 6. All of the above re-tested on a single-threaded SBCL build, with :fd-handler communication style Details of the implementation: 1. Because SBCL can not fork() with multiple-threads running, patch introduce a new mechanism called "Thread Stopper". It has single entry point, SWANK:REGISTER-THREAD-STOPPER which adds a callback, called by SWANK to stop/start background threads of various libraries. 2. A new entry point SWANK:CALL-WITH-ONLY-INITIAL-THREAD will stop all background threads (using the above thread stopper protocol), except for the initial thread in the Lisp image, and restart them 3. Swank itself uses the thread stopper protocol, to register a callback that will stop all the multithreaded connections threads, and then restart them after the call to fork() 4. In the implementation of the above, there were several swank-backend interface changed, and some added, namely MAKE-FD-STREAM had gained element-type argument, backend JOIN-THREAD added, and CREATE-REPL had new keyword argument added. The thread stopper interface is intentionally minimalist, with a single entry point, as to simplify adding thread-stopper hooks to libraries, they can dispatch on (fboundp) or such. Regards, Max

Proposed tweak for `slime-lisp-options'

Hi, `slime-lisp-options' in slime.el uses `split-string' to parse the contents of `inferior-lisp-program' This fails if the lisp program is in a path with spaces in it (such as executables in Windows). Quoting does not help. Segmentation fault on Raspberry pi

Patch for LispWorks compiler notes error

Hello: As it stands, SLIME will error when it encounters compiler notes generated by LispWorks 6 :EXPLAIN functionality. For example: (defun dist (x y) (declare (:explain :variables)) (sqrt (+ (* x x) (* y y)))) will error with #<CONDITIONS:COMPILER-NOTE 402026DC23> fell through ETYPECASE expression. Wanted one of (ERROR STYLE-WARNING WARNING). [Condition of type CONDITIONS:CASE-FAILURE] As a patch, add the two lines prefixed by a + to the function LISPWORKS-SEVERITY in the file "swank-lispworks.lisp" indicated at the end of this mail.
