This is a follow-up on my previous message: I have moved from sbcl-1.0.14 to 1.0.21 and also updated slime. Again, this is mostly an FYI (swank error, slime error), since I am not *that* desperate yet. I am following the instructions in the manual for connection to a remote lisp. [slime-devel] slime/swank versions differ message

Hello, This is more of an FYI than a cry for help. This morning I upgraded my slime to the latest distro. When I start it up, I get a warning message: Versions differ: 2008-08-18 (slime) vs. 2008-09-28 (swank). Continue? (y or n) After saying yes, operation seems normal. Sorry if this was answered before, but the last 3 months of subject lines didn't seem to indicate the question was asked... When using M-. to find the source to a function, all is well. But for a *method*, is there a new binding to jump to the selected specialized method? It used to be possible to just hit SPC on the method, and would jump right to the code.

Dear Slimers, I've implemented support for Lispworks in slime so that all characters exchanged between emacs and lispworks are LW:SIMPLE-TEXT-STRING (vectors of LW:SIMPLE-CHAR) which allow one to directly send and receive korean, japanese etc characters from the REPL, and to hit C-c C-c on a utf-8 encoded file w/o blowing up the slime connection. XOS> (type-of *) LISPWORKS:SIMPLE-TEXT-STRING Limitations: * You MUST have set your lispworks to use LW:SIMPLE-CHAR by default. (see LW:SET-DEFAULT-CHARACTER-ELEMENT-TYPE) For us, this is done at time of delivery for the text console that we use to connect slime to. * You MUST be in an image where a recent FLEXI-STREAMS is loaded (i.e. :FLEXI-STREAMS must be on the features list.) Failure to satisfy this reverts you to the previous, broken behaviour. :-) * Only 1 type of connection to lispworks is allowed; i.e. you can't have one latin-1 and one utf-8 connection simultaneously. This is because I couldn't find out how to inspect the current connection to determine what external-format it had been opened with. Maybe somebody can fix this. * You can then set your emacs with this (setq slime-net-coding-system 'utf-8-unix) and have a UTF-8 interaction with lispworks. This patch is taken against a (very recent) tip checkout, and should apply cleanly, I hope. Cheers! [slime-devel] Wrong output positioning in the REPL

With the recent REPL overhaul, positioning of output and the REPL result is a bit screwed. For example, type 'foo at the REPL, then compile some form using C-c C-c, the REPL will look like ; compiling (DEFUN ASDFO ...)FOO So there's a newline missing. -T.

I would request that all the slime window-configuration/restoration code be moved to a contrib module. By default slime could have a simple `bury-buffer on q' mechanism to get rid of all windows. The fancy window configuration/restoration should work only if the contrib is loaded. Emacs has many window and frame related variables that one can customize, and display-functions that one can advise to make it work the way one wants. The current code (I suspect) makes particular assumptions that are no doubt valid for the developers but these are invalid in general. I won't waste my breath on scenarios any more but slime always always gets it wrong: getting back to the buffer I want usually takes 2-3 window/buffer rearrange commands. Moving the window configuration stuff out of slime would also be a step towards making much touted `simplicity' goals of slime a reality in the code rather the "mailing list concept" -- Madhu

With allegro, [acl express-8.1 on linux, with default settings, start up slime with C-u M-x slime], Everytime the debugger is entered when slime evaluates an expression, a new process called "worker" is created. This is not closed even on quitting the debugger. The processes are blocked on receive-if. Over a session I noticed 1000s of stale worker processes (I enter the debugger a lot:) Can you reproduce this? - inspect *mp::all-processes*, - evaluate (break) in *slime-scratch* (say) and return from debugger, a few times - inspect *mp::all-processes* again. I see items like #<MULTIPROCESSING:PROCESS worker(8) receive-if @ #x717377da> Which are never repead. -- Madhu
