[slime-devel] CLISP and W32: socket:socket-stream-handle

Trying the latest CVS slime on W32 with clisp 2.32, I was getting an error that socket:socket-stream-handle wasn't defined. Seems it's not exported on Windows for some reason. [slime-devel] Compiler notes list

Hi, I added some code to display the compiler messages in a separate buffer. [slime-devel] Why is Slime trying to open port 0?

I don't know exactly when the symptoms started, since I haven't been using SLIME for a while, but a CVS update doesn't make them go away. When I start Emacs and do M-x slime RET it fails trying to connect to port 0 of localhost. I don't understand, since a problem of this magnitude (can't use SLIME at all) would certainly be noticed by others, and I saw no previous posts about this. Presumably it is something peculiar about my configuration. I'm using Debian GNU/Linux 3.0 + 2.6.2 kernel + GNU Emacs 21.3.50.9. If you need more info, just ask. The output is included below. It uses a separate socket for raw output. This can be quite a faster than sending output encoded over the control channel. But I remember that I too had some trouble to get it to work with CLISP. Not sure what happened, but the problems magically disappeared for me. There seem to be some oddities in CLISP's streams. Helmut.

I have just updated my CVS sources of SLIME after a a dozen days of so. Hi all, Following recent advices on c.l.l, I just tried a recently downloaded (02/04/04) version of SLIME. I am using it with XEmacs 21.4.12 and clisp 2.32, and I'm getting the following strange behaviour : The first invocation of M-x slime RET in a just started XEmacs freezes it the following sequences of evaluated forms freeze it as weel : (slime-maybe-start-lisp) (slime-read-port-and-connect) or (slime-maybe-start-lisp) (slime-start-swank-server) ;; eval only once ! (setq port (slime-read-swank-port)) (slime-connect "localhost" port) but NOT the following (slime-maybe-start-lisp) (slime-start-swank-server) (setq *proc* (slime-net-connect "localhost" port)) (slime-init-connection *proc*) which works fine (i.e. after evaluating a few more forms I get a fully functional SLIME) In all cases, the lisp is started ok, as is the swank server. The problem seems to me to be located somewhere in the slime-init-connection/slime-net-connect interaction. I tried to put a conditional in slime-connect do process to slime-init-connection only if (slime-net-connect "localhost" port) returns, and to increase the delay between each run-with-timer (the swank server gets started after a good 3-4 seconds) but it didn't seem to help.
