Luke wrote this message to test a cvs-commit shell script. Because this text contains the word "ChangeLog", it should be sent to both the slime-cvs and slime-devel mailing lists. If this works, we will run this script from CVSROOT/loginfo. That way slime-devel will be informed of updates to the ChangeLog, and have an easier time of keeping track of SLIME changes, without being bothered by other commits. There are a couple of typos in slime.el: make-local should probably be make-local-variable. There are several calls to remove-hook with a single argument. On XEmacs, remove-hook takes 2. Those hooks that are being removed don't seem to be set anywhere. Ray

[slime-devel] Using SLIME with several CMUCL flavors

I use more than one CMUCL "flavor": vanilla CMUCL, CMUCL with a particular dumped image (e.g. McCLIM), vanilla SBCL, etc. What is the SLIME idiom, if any, for running a specific flavor? I'm running (Mac OS X Carbon) Emacs from CVS as of about two weeks ago, and slime CVS as of right now. Some of the slime faces are being set up strangely and kind of wrong. (116 is the _default_ default face, not my default). This means that some things get huge and out of alignment. (Mac rant: Sadly, even if this weren't the case, Monaco, which is by far the best monospace font on the Mac, has a bold face that's wider than its normal one! I do not understand how this could ever be acceptible in a supposedly "monospace" font! But the size difference above just makes it even worse.) By the way, congratulations on slime-repl! It's the first time I've been able to write something like (progn (format t "Enter foo: ") (read)) and had "Enter foo: " actually appear before the read in Emacs. In slime inferior-lisp mode, pressing enter will either enter a new line or send the completed s-exp to lisp. C-j does the same thing, except it will re-indent the line. This doesn't seem to work in slime-repl. It would be nice if it could! Ray

[slime-devel] Problem compiling functions longer than around 4093 characters?

Hello, I was trying to compile a function interactively (i.e. with ^C^C). It's a relatively long function. When I did it under slime, I got the following: * ;; Connection to Emacs lost. ;; [ Error in function LISP::ASSERT-ERROR: Short read: length=4191 pos=4093] The function uses XLIB and I shortened it by "using" XLIB and changing the xlib:<foo> calls to just <foo> calls. It then compiled without error. So I looked around and found another piece of code with a long function. It is over 10000 characters. The same thing happened: * ;; Connection to Emacs lost. ;; [ Error in function LISP::ASSERT-ERROR: Short read: length=13988 pos=4093] The error occurs in read-next-form in swank.lisp. Looks like the code isn't handling the transfer of more than one pipe-buffer-full of data. Take 2 on adding eldoc support to SLIME. Things to note: - support for GNU version >= 21.3 using hook ``eldoc-print-current-symbol-info-function''; older versions use advice. - 2 approaches to caching arglist lookups; see variable ``slime-cache-type'' for details. - avoids interning symbols when looking for functions that don't exist. - function ``slime-documentation'' to display documentation rather than description for thing-at-point.
