Perhaps he has an SBCL that doesn't have Unicode support? 256 is not a valid code-point for regular ASCII. Dying seems like a pretty extreme response, though. :-)

Using sbcl 0.9.8.0-1ubuntu3 and slime HEAD from cvs on Linux 2.6.15-27-686.
Works here with Debian's SBCL 1.0 and slime HEAD.
