Ah. The manual needs correcting in that case: "You can check the default style by calling `SWANK-BACKEND:PREFERRED-COMMUNICATION-STYLE'. You can also override the default by setting `SWANK:*COMMUNICATION-STYLE*' in your Swank init file." Thanks again.
