Helmut, Thanks for the pointer - indeed I have found that Gentoo has something called xemacs-packagae-sumo. That has solved the problem. Best wishes, Keith Helmut Eller wrote:

It is a bit strange though, that ILisp works. ILisp also requires inf-lisp.
In general it is better do disable ILisp when you use SLIME.
