I dunno. I thought it was an Emacs20 problem as it doesn't occur with Emacs22.
I /am/ on GNU Emacs 22.0.50.1, though.
The CVS version fixes the problem by calling fontify "manually" (at the cost of annoying those brave souls who disable font-lock mode).
