In XEmacs, we recently switched development from CVS to mercurial. The choice pretty quickly boiled down to hg or git. I think mercurial is a bit simpler to use (it has fewer commands, but extension infrastructure if needed) and much more documented. Otherwise, they're quite equivalent in functionality.
