Yes, but Slime (or more correct: swank server) is used in some web framework(s) and probably is meant to be running in production code on webservers (where security _is_ an issue). Hence, a way to harden access to the swank server would be very welcome!

The external helper programs add some complexity and I think it's more important to keep the system simple than to add security features.
