That happened to me too. I also removed all .fasl files but the error still persisted. However, when I re-started emacs, the problem disappeared and everything works fine now.
the error happens when the .lisp files have been recompiled but slime.el hasn't been reloaded. one solution to this, works unless defvar values have changed, is to just reload slime.el. restarting emacs is even more effective.
