I'm new to SLIME. Installing with the latest SBCL seems to go ok with the "Meta-x slime" until I get the following Connected. Hack and be merry! error in process filter: slime-process-available-input: Wrong type argument: listp, \223 error in process filter: Wrong type argument: listp, \223
Can anyone suggest how to deal with this?
Thanks

Try upgrading to the latest SLIME version. Funny environment settings make newish SBCL emit unicode characters and old SLIME versions don't like that.
If that doesn't help, enable debug-on-error in Emacs and show us the full backtrace. Also set *log-events* to T in swank.lisp and send the contents of the *inferior-lisp* buffer.
