That grey background for uncompiled changes interacts very badly with my environment, both because I have a foreground color that doesn't contrast again grey, and because I always have extensive amounts of what SLIME thinks are uncompiled changes when they are not. Is there really no switch to kill this?
Also, what would be an appropriate hook to plug in code that must run when the debugger gets invoked?

Just don't load slime-highlight-edits contrib.
