Is there a way to make highlight matching paren mode and highlight edits modes play well? I've noticed that when highlight-edits is turned on, the matching paren does not always appear, probably because the face does not account for it?

You can customize the faces so that they play along on your box:
M-x customize-face slime-highlight-edits-face
M-x customize-face show-paren-match
M-x customize-face show-paren-mismatch
