Indeed, there was one ) extra vi editor spotted it right-away.. However, I am having a problem now with another file in asdf-install, and this time it's not that clear -- apparently, it's an Error: end of file while reading..?? Any idea? Not sure if it works the same on Lispworks, but in SBCL + Emacs/SLIME, you can target your library archive directly with ASDF instead of relying on the automated download. In other words (require 'asdf) (require 'asdf-install) (asdf-install:install "/path/to/your/cl-ppcre.tar.gz") Obviously, you'll want to use the windows file path in place of that one. As long as the tarball has that asd file in it, it should work. Now, for this library, you should just be able to do (asdf-install:install 'cl-ppcre) instead of getting your own download (this is probably what is meant by "the usual way"). cl-ppcre is well maintained, so ASDF should be able to handle the download for you unless the CLiki is down for whatever reason. -Leo PS. I am at a bank behind a firewall, and, my previous crash seemed to indicate that something went wrong in ports.lisp (networking??). So I did a quick look see for the word proxy in asdf-install, and lo-and-behold, I found in defpackage.lisp an area where I could possibly configure proxy info... Now, my proxy information is as follows: Hostname is something.secret.rbc.com Port is 8080 Username someusername Password supersecret The proxy is an http proxy - how would you configure the parameters below, so that it will take these parameters above to configure the defpackage.lisp below. It's an http proxy, and I don't notice anywhere the ability to set up the port value.. Any ideas? Ok, so I downloaded the latest 6.0.1 Lispworks for windows, and I do not see anywhere in the gui even a mention of ASDF - there is no "button"... On their web site, they state that they have ASDF integration in IDE - I don't see it. The link in their web pages takes me here: To use ASDF in the LispWorks IDE: 1. Load ASDF and some ASDF system definitions in the usual ASDF way. 2. Hi there, I have come across something that I need just a little bit of help with. I managed to write some lisp code to read a flat file, line by line. I also managed to put those lines of code into something like this: ( ( "A,MSFT.N,D,12.4,12:43:00") ( "f,IBM.N,f,108.4,11:09:023") ) All comma delineated text files. Now, I would like to convert this into something that I can deal with from a lisp perspective - I would like to get so that these values are symbols - so this is what I really want: ( ( A MSFT.N D 12.4 12:43:00 ) ( f IBM.N f 108.4 11:09:023 ) ) I noticed that there is a function called INTERN which seems to convert a regular string to a symbol, but, I don't really have a regular string, I have a "mess" as shown above. Any idea on how I can go from a messed up single long string, to a bunch of symbols, so I can finally start dealing with the symbols in the line from a file a "lisp way"? Hi there, a quick question - I have a reasonably firm understanding of how lambda functions work, however, I cannot immediately see why you would want to use one, when you can write a perfectly good NAMED function instead... So under which circumstances would you absolutely want to use a lambda function and why, and under which circumstances would you absolutely NOT want to use a lambda function.. Thanks, Alex.

I wrote a quick Mandelbrot set renderer in Clojure, after hearing the sad news that the great mathematician Benoit Mandelbrot passed away this weekend. Watch his TED talk (http://www.ted.com/talks/benoit_mandelbrot_fractals_the_art_of_roughness.ht…) and you will find it hard to feel as if you didn't know him. It was simple and fun to write, as Clojure has support for complex numbers. It took me a while to figure out how to turn that support on, though. It can download, install, and load any of over 300 libraries with a few simple commands. For LispWorks, instead of typing my code in repl, I type it in the editor, also compile there , and use repl for testing only. I have noticed that the editor has some very handy buffers and definitions menus. Exactly the stuff I was looking for. Sent from my iPhone

At our last meeting, I mentioned my use of python as a utility to make a Java application "programmable". There seemed to be some interest in this technique. I used this technique in a web app I built for one of my clients. They needed to change formulas for calculating aluminium window frame sizes without having me involved. Sometime the calculating formula would change by 0.25 of an inch… So, here is a technique where python interpreter is embedded in Java code, the Java then for the sake of this demo, sets a object in Python called X - does a little bit of manipulation of it on the Python interpreter, and then, sets a variable of the executing class SimpleEmbedded via "this" - and then execute a callback from Python back into Java… This very cool feature alone, makes the Jython interpreter very versatile (and potentially dangerous)… PyObject shown below is the most primitive Object that can be easily cast if need be into other objects… Python also does have an eval() function which can lead to other very interesting and convoluted possibilities... I think so, but there was some debate here. - some discussion on JIT compilation - Alex described how shared-memory concurrency can be implemented using in-memory databases - Antiweb uses Berkeley DB in a similar way - Y2K problem, fixing it using automated tools - more programming war stories (fascinating for me, definitely helps in appreciating modern technology) - discussion of articles: "Crash-Only Software" and "A Benchmark for Multi-Core Machines" - using Clojure within Java projects - obstacles to the use of Lisp professionally in Toronto? - jaded attitudes towards the language due to many people's experiences with early Lisps (interpreted, slow) - fixation on the idea that it's an AI language, even though nowadays you can do just about anything with it - (my own attitude: Lisp needs better branding.. Hi there, first of all Paul and Dave, thanks for replying!! The question can perhaps be best explained with an example: repl=> (defun doit-3 (x) (* 3 x)) repl=> '(some more cool stuff) repl=>'(and more and more) i keep testing and playing around with functions more and more I can certainly run my doit-3 function repl=>(doit-3 4) 12 repl=> and now, I say to myself, - how the heck did I write that doit-3, I forgot, because, I wrote it 20 minutes ago, it obviously exists inside REPL because I can execute it... So, how do I view [dump??] the contents of doit-3 to the screen, or to a file on the disk, so I can invoke an editor and modify doit-3 and then reload it?? I am just interested in learning how to be more productive in a standard software development cycle. Thanks, Alex. If you typed the function in recently enough, you can hit Ctrl+up (or similar depending on what kind of prompt you're using) to see previous definitions you entered, but there's sometimes a limit to how much history you can access that way. If the only place you've typed the function is into the REPL, and you can't get far enough up using REPL history, then there isn't really a way of backing the definition out. With your example above: => (defun doit-3 (x) (* 3 x)) DOIT-3 => (doit-3 4) 12 [some time later your typing history runs out and you forgot how doit-3 was defined] => #'doit-3 #<FUNCTION DOIT-3> If you're used to JavaScript, this seems asinine; why doesn't it just print out the function text? The reason is that when you define a function, it's compiled into some form of byte-code and the REPL throws away the initial representation (in JavaScript that doesn't happen so you can easily get the definition given a function name). The sure way to have access to functions you've written earlier is to record them in a file, as opposed to just the REPL. You've gotten some LispWorks pointers already (which I assume are correct, I don't use it myself). In Emacs/slime, the way you'd do this is 1. split your window [default binding C-x 2 or C-x 3 for a vertical split] 2. open a lisp file in one, and slime in the other [M-x slime] 3. type your definitions out in the lisp file, and use Emacs keystrokes to send individual definitions into the prompt [default binding C-M-x] C-M-x will send the definition closest your pointer to the SLIME prompt as though you typed it there, but you'll still have access to the initial definition. If you need to redefine it, just make the changes and hit C-M-x again with your pointer somewhere in the definition. -Leo

Hi there, A bit of a noob question - let's say that I have an interactive Repl session that has been going on for about an hour or so, and all of a sudden I wish to modify a defun I wrote a while ago. What is the easiest way first to show that code on the console, modify it, and load it back into Repl ? I am just trying to come up with a comfortable development environment for myself. [toronto-lisp] LaTex for Scheme

Do any of you use LaTeX? I am looking for something to typeset Scheme snippets in LaTeX article or amsart. I have tried slatex with so-so results. I am not happy to have to run it from the command line, and do not presently have time to hook it into emacs the way I want. I use the listings package successfully for CL but this package does not really understand Scheme as far as I can tell. Any suggestions? Best, - Dave -
