Personally, I'm starting the year off by going through the codebase for Elite for Emacs <http://members.fortunecity.com/salkosuo/elite-for-emacs/> and trying to get a working game out of it. I'll let you know how it goes (and if I end up fully re-writing the thing, I'll toss it up on github with an open source license). -Leo

i haven't used a mailing list before, so i don't know if i'm replying to the message correctly. anyway, from what i've read/seen erlang is really good for distribution problems, and someone has already developed a p2p layered database over it (actually more than one person). p2p has some funny things about it in terms of reliability, even when you control all the nodes. it may be a good idea to at least look at the solutions that researches have made in regards to p2p datastores, i just happened to stumble upon them when learning about erlang. ~~ Paul Joseph Iannazzo.

Happy new year. I've started thinking about Lisp projects I could work on this year, since I feel like I didn't do enough real Lisp hacking in 2010. I'd like to write a distributed backup system in Clojure. It's a simple idea: create a distributed filesystem using the free hard drive space in people's PCs. If you backup 100GB of data, it will be replicated in two other places within this "cloud", but you must contribute 200GB of your free hard drive space to the cloud in return. Hence you get geographic redundancy for your backups while providing space for other people's backups. I believe that this system could be created entirely as a P2P app, without needing any centralized component. The slightly tricky part is to ensure fairness; i.e. that people give roughly as much as they receive. I'd like to write this in Clojure as I like the language, and being on the JVM makes it easy for the client app to run on Windows, Mac, and Linux. This project "scratches my own itch", as I've always disliked setting up and maintaining backups in multiple locations for my own data. People have thought of similar ideas before, for example: http://www.andrew.cmu.edu/course/18-842-nwalia/ ... but I don't see that any such service has become popular. What would folks like to use Lisp for in 2011?

[toronto-lisp] Potential new user/dev group for free/open source software

I don't know how people feel about free/open source software here, but I've been kinda wanting to start a new group that promotes and encourages the use of free/open source software in Toronto and the GTA and in the rest of Ontario. In terms of Lisp, I guess this would mean discussing the perils and pitfalls of using certain open source licenses for Lisp code or Lisp implementations, and maybe discussing which free software implementations or open source modules are the best to use, and maybe how it impacts business. I think that's one of the larger issues; building a business on free software (I know a few Toronto Lisp people were involved in startups and larger enterprises). So what would you guys think about this? Does anyone here like talking about free/open source software? :P -- Rudolf Olah <omouse(a)gmail.com>
