[cells-devel] Hoping for a kickstart

Greetings, I exchanged a couple posts with Kenny Tilton on c.l.l about my project a while back, but I was distracted by immediate practical concerns and didn't really get into any details. I've since read a couple of the bits of documentation that accompany cells (as acquired through asdf-install)- specifically the 01-cell-basics.lisp document, some of hello world and maybe bits of something else I'm not recalling. At any rate, while I've been able to work the examples and more or less understand things on the surface, my initial attempt at using Cells for a very simple chunk of my own app was frustrating. Rather than showing you the feeble start I made, I'd like to describe the desired functionality, and get some feedback as to the idiom(s) to use. The primary classes are cargo items, cargo holds and maybe cargo sets. --Cargo items: slots that wouldnt change in the object's lifetime: item-id type-id volume-units (1-3 currently) changable slots (c-in for now I imagine, but if Cells invades the rest of the program, maybe not): holder-id authorized-holder-ids recipient-id calculated states I want efficient repeated access to and/or side effects on change: stolen (holder isnt a member of auth-h-ids) delivered (holder is recip) spaced (holder is not a char but a sector) --Cargo holds: static: ship-owner-id capacity dynamic: volume-used cargo-type-to-quantity hash --Cargo sets: Basically I'd like to be able to create a cargo set that is bigger than any cargo hold, and allow it to be distributed among the holds by both npc agents and players, but retain a handle on the set and certain dynamic subsets like the cargo in a particular ship, all the ships in a sector, all spaced cargo, all stolen cargo of a particular type in a sector, etc. If the set mechanism were flexible and fast enough, I imagine that Holds could just be a type of set (the set of cargo held by character X), but there is a question of where to enforce hold capacity. These sets would be used by npc agents (eg pirates) to drive potential actions (both at the level of posting a mission to collect specific cargo, and a single agent picking the best cargo close by that will fit in its hold). So, I hope that made sense. I don't expect anyone to go out of their way on this; I think I really just need a push in the right direction. ~Michael Warnock Guild Software Inc.

I got so lost in the permutations that I think I will take a couple of days to list them all and then carefully construct a comprehensive test suite just to help me think about the rewrite. This will include attempted violations of the Cells discipline, such as setfing an input cell within an output method without wrapping it in a suitable macro that will defer the setf until propagation to dependencies is complete. This is a new discipline by the way. Really simplifies the code. Thx anyway, kt

Thomas Burdick has been pushing the envelope on Cells lately, and it turns out to have been A Good Thing. I am not sure we can call this Cells III, but I hate those namby-pambies who go up by hundredths of a version, so what the heck. :) And as I fix up the stuff Thomas managed to break, turns out the code is getting even simpler and more efficient. Always nice. I do not expect much response -- one really has to have thought about Cells internals -- but it cannot hurt to ask. The deal is this: I am anxious to have any test code folks think will break Cells. Especially challenging is a def-c-output SETF of a c-input mediated Cell, or a dependent Cell that recalculates its KIDS slot, or a combination wherein the output setf triggers a kids recalc /and/ the new kids have cells with rules that look for each other by name and then use ruled slots of each other. <gasp> Anyway, this is my problem, just thought I would see if there is someone out there who takes diabolical pleasure from breaking code. :) Peace, ken

[cells-devel] Cells and peristency? All cells or none - or?

Hi all: I am currently trying to implement a persistency for a Cells-based app using AllegroCache (and OS X, ACL 7.0 Enterprise Edition). Now, I am not so sure if it makes sense at all to specify the persistency per model... Suppose I have a network of cells each being connected either via def- c-output or some other means and therefore depending on each other in their state. This is so because I figured I cannot re-load a valid overall state comprised by all cells in my app by just loading a few of the models from the DB. So, I think, there should be some general (meta-level) persistency that is inherent by all cells that have references to other cells. Now, as I see it, this needs some more tweaking of def-c-output, synapses and other means that link cells to ensure we get some knowledge of these links. This knowledge is then transformed into some code that defines the respective classes as persistant. Which leads to some new areas for me: Changing the metaclass of a class at runtime... Doable at all? Meaningful? Need to investigate... Any ideas or hints or solution attemps of youz guyz out there in space? Thanks for any comments. Frank

Hi kenny, et al., I was just updating the cells-gtk documentation. I am wondering whether I answered this question about using :initform with c? versus c-in correctly, Q: What is the difference between using c-in and c? in a slot's :initform ? A: The usual semantics of :initform do not apply when :initform is given a c? rule. Instead of just setting the value at initialization, when c? is used, the value of the slot is checked and updated using the rule throughout program execution. If you have the time, take a look at the answer to "What is Cells?" too. See: http://common-lisp.net/project/cells-gtk/faq.html BTW, I will soon be rolling out some new capabilities with cells-gtk, including GtkDrawingArea, and bindings for the GDK primitives for drawing. I hope to have a demo that presents a graph and uses cells to update the edges as the user drags the nodes around. [cells-devel] Cells/Cello+OpenMCL status?

Hi all... I'm just starting to take a look at cells and cello and am having some problems... The first one is that loading :cells-test fails right after (CELLS::STARTING CELLS::TEST CELLS::MANY-USEDS) with "Array index 16 out of bounds for #*1111111111111111 .", the call in question being (ccl::%sbitset #*1111111111111111 16 1). Is there something I'm doing radically wrong here? Cello also fails to load, but I figured I'd start with Cells and fix one thing at a time. :-) Thanks, --chris
