Hi, I have a class which is defined like this (basically, wraps a pointer): (defclass x-display () ((display-pointer :initform (null-pointer) :initarg :display-pointer :documentation "pointer to an Xlib display structure"))) For convenience, I would like to use it in place of a pointer, with some extra error checking: (defmethod translate-to-foreign (value (type (eql 'x-display))) (with-slots (display-pointer) value (when (null-pointer-p display-pointer) (error "the X11 display is not open")) display-pointer)) But this doesn't work: functions complain that they expect a system-area-pointer (I am in SBCL), so this method is not called. What am I doing wrong? Thanks, Tamas

[cffi-devel] Your approach to debug CFFI problems (segfaults)

Hello together, I am trying to get running the cl-alleg library: http://cl-alleg.sourceforge.net/ But in cmucl, sbcl and clisp I either get segfaults or cause the abort handler to be called. My set-up is a recent debian lenny: Linux XXX 2.6.21.070708-1354 #1 SMP clisp 1:2.41-1 cmucl 19d-20061116-2 sbcl 1:1.0.7.0-1 slime 1:20070628-1 liballegro4.2-dev 2:4.2.0-5 cffi-070620.tar.gz I've started to write lisp-unit test cases to track down the root of the problem, but without success. I would really appreciate if you could tell me about your approach to debugging such problems. [cffi-devel] [PATCH] emulating LONG-LONG on ECL

Attached there is a patch made against the main branch(not the newtypes one) which adds :UNSIGNED-LONG-LONG and :LONG-LONG to ECL; to be more specific: 1) it adds a new feature: CFFI:EMULATED-LONG-LONG(not sure this is a good name - see the callbacks issue below) 2) it calculates at compile time the machine endianess and pushes a new feature, either :LITTLE-ENDIAN or :BIG-ENDIAN 3) %MEM-REF and %MEM-SET are renamed to %NATIVE-MEM-REF and %NATIVE-MEM-SET while the new %MEM-REF and %MEM-SET dispatch on the effective type using CANONICALIZE-FOREIGN-TYPE(which is forward-referenced but it should be ok) 4) it adds compiler macros for %NATIVE-MEM-REF and %NATIVE-MEM-SET this patch passes the DEREF.*LONG-LONG memory tests(which I ran manually since ECL seems to have some problems in running the tests) two are the problems I've encountered: 1) callbacks don't work since actually ECL doesn't have LONG-LONG. this can be "fixed" by stating in the docs that on platforms where LONG-LONG is emulated callback simply don't work. 2) although possibly not related to CFFI, when loading IOLIB-POSIX I got this: NIL is not of type REAL. Broken at CFFI::NOTICE-FOREIGN-STRUCT-DEFINITION. [cffi-devel] Default library suffix for OS X / Intel under OpenMCL

Hi list, I was trying to run CL+SSL on OpenMCL on a Mac/Intel machine. However, it fails to find the shared library libssl.so. I checked the list archives, and I noted the problems of e.g. trying to link in 32-bit libraries. But this seems to be different: the library does exist, and it is 64 bit, but it does not exist under the name libssl.so -- it's libssl.dylib. The problem, as far as I can tell, is that the cffi-openmcl.lisp file defines the following: (eval-when (:compile-toplevel :load-toplevel :execute) (mapc (lambda (feature) (pushnew feature *features*)) '(;; OS/CPU features. #+darwinppc-target cffi-features:darwin #+unix cffi-features:unix #+ppc32-target cffi-features:ppc32 #+x8664-target cffi-features:x86-64 ))) And the default suffix for unix is .so, not .dylib. The problem is that load-foreign-library from libraries.lisp only tries to grab the default suffix (which in this case is .so) and then fails to find the .dylib library. I tried fixing it by changing the #+unix line above to use cffi-features:darwin, but I still got the 'unable to load' message. I followed Gary Byers' suggestion and ran lipo, and got: $ lipo -info /usr/lib/libssl.dylib Architectures in the fat file: /usr/lib/libssl.dylib are: i386 ppc I also installed the same library using darwinports and that one gives me this: $ lipo -info /opt/local/lib/libssl.dylib Non-fat file: /opt/local/lib/libssl.dylib is architecture: i386 This is all on a 64-bit enabled processor. But I have no problem loading up the above libraries from e.g. C code. Is it reasonable to conclude that I will have to compile 64-bit versions of these libraries, name them .so, and load those? Is there a better way of doing this? Please let me know if there is any more information I can provide. Thanks for your help, - David
