I'm posting to this list one more time to announce FOMUS is just about ported (or actually rewritten) to C++... It should be a huge improvement over the old Lisp version... It's a lot faster, doesn't use ungodly amounts of memory, has a proper interface for extending functionality, and can be loaded into any software or language that can interface with a C library. It's also integrated into the CM/Grace environment, plus I have Lisp wrappers and an Pd external now. As I finish it up I'll be adding a lot of examples and tutorials. Here are some of the improvements: faster native input file format built-in docs and search for settings and marks behavior can be modified in different places (settings can go into parts, measures, individual notes, etc.) buffered input for environments like Max/Pd same capabilities as the old Lisp version (I'd say I'm maybe 90% to where I was at feature-wise w/ the old Lisp version) I still have quite a few bugs to fix and minor features to finish up (e.g., special notations like tremolos, harmonics, etc.). Right now it works in Linux and OS X, and Windows (both Cygwin and freshly ported native binaries--the native build will be flaky for at least another week). Current version is 0.1.7-alpha... I anticipate taking maybe another month or two to squash bugs and build up a large collection of examples, then I'll release a beta version. hi again! So, I'm trying to understand the backend_ly.lisp of fomus... my doubts are in this passage.. What is - or where is defined - the function "xxx" - from (xxx di str) ... it should get the values ":up" or ":down", right? 2. I tried to create a third - empty - direction, ":justplace", to place whatever texts I wanted... (ecase di (:up "^") (:down "_") (:justplace nil)) .... Hi, I'm trying to make a grouping for a string quartet. I could use the :orchestra ensemble-type, but I don't want the two violins to be sub-grouped I'm using FOMUS v0.2.28 with Common Music v2.11.3 on SBCL v1.0.14. I've tried creating a new ensemble-type and a new instr-group, but I keep getting an error, in what I think is check-settings-type. Is it possible to include a lilypond text throught fomus that isn't intialized by th "^" symbol? I.e.: "_" or also another types of texts like "/tempo"... Rob, The lisp documentation won't be helpful at all unless you work with lisp--lisp has a built in function "describe" that calls up brief documentation strings for functions if they exist You can force the staff using a :STAFF mark (like this: (:staff 1) or (:staff 2) --you should also be able to specify a choice (:staff 1 2) (:staff 2 3) (maybe useful for notating a piano part onto 3 staves, etc..) Soon it'll get easier as I put some of these things into parts and instruments--right now you have to stick it in every note or put (:startstaff- 1) in the very first note I'll put more examples up soon (plus organize the ones that are there now) The examples pages will soon evolve into an indexed list with keywords (click on "staves" and see three or four examples of how to control staves, etc..) Since I'm (slowly) getting in the last of the main feature I originally wanted to put in, I'd be curious to know what I should start improving in general (besides documentation)... hi i am writing a piece for a harpsichord with two manuals part 1 :name "harpsichord" :abbrev "hpschd." :instr :harpsichord; what is the best way to do this - atm i am sending :voice 1 and :voice 2 to send the two different parts to the two different manuals both manuals start in bass clef and both climb in to treble clef - the problem is the bottom stave stays in bass clef and the music jumps into the manual 1 part. i would like to be able to switch between single line cross-stave writing and two part writing. so to summarise... i want to lock voice two to stave two of :harpsichord and have it so it changes into treble clef where necessary. anyone know how to do this? thanks rob once again... many thanks for fomus i am finding it incredibly useful :) very soon i hope to become very prolific ;)

Seems lilypond changed its way of specifying fractional tuplet-numbers after v.2.8. Hello, im just starting to look at this very interesting tool, and trying some simple cases to get going. First issue is how to control tuplets. Fex, how can i make fomus "simplify" a 5/8 measure with 6 sixtuplets as one group of six notes with a "6:5" (or "6") subdivision mark, instead of a sequence of tied trioles? (fomus :output '(:data (:lilypond :view t)) :global (list (make-timesig :off 0 :time '(5 8) :beat 1/8)) :parts (list (make-part :instr :flute :events (loop repeat 6 for off from 0 by 5/6 collect (make-note :off off :note 60 :dur 5/6))))) Ive tried fiddling with various settings, :default-tuplet-divs and :default-tuplets, :auto-quantize and such without luck.

hi again this may be the fault of music xml rather than fomus but FYI: :textnote marks when imported into finale via xml are relative to measure position rather than attached to the note (as an articulation would be) - so once you start doing things like inserting bars, the text markings get out of alignment with the note heads cheers rob

in 3/8 if you want two dotted quavers it should make it in to a 2:3 duplet i think but instead it does ugly things joining a quaver and semiquaver followed by a dotted quaver thanks rob

v0.2.22 Fixed instrument names and abbreviations in LilyPond 2.10 Remove newlines from notetexts, etc.. Auto set timesig COMP slot to t for appropriate time signatures (6/8, etc.) Fix for textnotes in LilyPond (Kilian) Changed maximum tuplet size to more reasonable number TODO (soon, when I get the chance...) better tuplet decisions finish testing so-called chunks (which will let you use different settings for different parts, sections, etc..)

Try adding this line: init :max-tuplet-dur 2 It seems like this setting always needs to be tweaked--I'll have to come up with a rule that makes better guesses when it comes to appropriate tuplet sizes--maybe a :preferred-tuplet-size setting is appropriate--I think you shouldn't have to set a hard maximum to get the tuplets to work right.
