setf not working

Hello, yesterday, I fell on something extremely weird, or at least, which I currently fail to understand. Basically, after a (defvar *var*), there are times when (setq *var* '(0 0)) doesn't work (the previous value of *var* remains in effect). I cannot currently provide a minimal example because the situation involves several levels of nested macro / function calls in code I didn't write (*var* is solely mine though). At first, I thought I had fallen on a compiler bug, but I get the same behavior with at least 3 lisp implementations. I ultimately found a workaround, consisting in using (list 0 0) instead of '(0 0) in the assignment. I'm hoping this would be a clue to someone here to get at least a direction for investigating... Hi, It seems to me that ASSERT and CHECK-TYPE are not as convenient as they could be. In particular, ISLISP seems to have a better alternative in ASSURE. ASSURE is easy to define: (defmacro assure (type form) (let ((object (copy-symbol 'object))) `(let ((,object ,form)) (check-type ,object ,type) ,object))) The important difference is that the value of form is returned, which allows using ASSURE inline in expressions: (1+ (assure number x)) …in place of the more lengthy: (progn (check-type x number) (1+ x)) Is ASSURE, or something similar, part of any utility library, like Alexandria or the likes? On an unrelated note, I recently came up with the following utility macro which I found very useful: (defmacro assocf (item alist &optional default &rest keys &key test test-not key) (declare (ignore test test-not key)) (let ((it (copy-symbol 'it)) (cons (copy-symbol 'cons))) `(let* ((,it ,item) (,cons (assoc ,it ,alist ,@keys))) (unless ,cons (setf ,cons (cons ,it ,default) ,alist (cons ,cons ,alist))) ,cons))) Again, is something like this already part of some utility library? Dear All, We are still keeping this at low profile but Apple just accepted our fully sandboxed 3D Game and Simulation Design AgentCubes application (built in CCL) into the Apple Mac App store. Build a 3D simulation game and turn it into HTML5 (no Flash, no Java) page that can run on many mobile browsers. Any feedback would be appreciated. State of common-lisp.net ?

Hi, What's the current state of common-lisp.net ? I'm asking because at ELS'13 I have been informed that the mailing list links on some of the pages I maintain don't work anymore (CDR and Closer to MOP). This seems to be an effect of the move from mailman to whatever system is used now. I contacted the maintainer of common-lisp.net about this, to ask what URLs to use instead, but I'm not getting any responses. At ELS'13 there was also a lightning talk about the common-lisp.net situation, but I didn't catch all the details. Could somebody repeat what was said then? [pro] best practices on type safety of/for generic functions

Hi All; This is probably a dumb question, but here goes. John Alan McDonald (Hi, John, if you're on this list!) has graciously consented to let me try to revive some almost 20 year old CL software ( Arizona <http://home.comcast.net/~johnamcdonald/jamcdonald0/az93.pdf>). SBCL doesn't seem to like type-related declarations in defgeneric forms (per the spec<http://www.ai.mit.edu/projects/iiip/doc/CommonLISP/HyperSpec/Body/mac_defge…>). And there are a lot of defgenerics of the form: (declaim (declaration :returns)) ;; OK, only once, but then used repeatedly... (defgeneric interactor-role-cursor (interactor role) (declare (type Interactor interactor) (type (or Interactor-Role Null) role) (:returns (type xlib:Cursor))) (:documentation "Returns the cursor to be used when this Role is current.")) (defmethod interactor-role-cursor ((interactor Interactor) (role Interactor-Role)) "The default cursor" (xlt:window-cursor (interactor-window interactor) :target)) I did certainly benefit from some of the runtime errors generated as a result of the type declarations of some of the defmethods and defuns in my efforts to update the clx parts of the software. What is best practice, then, as regards trying to provide useful type-related information associated with generic functions? Or have I been so brain-damaged by C++/Java/etc that I am thinking about the problem-space entirely the wrong way, and thus my solution-space question is entirely meaningless? Thanks, -jm
