[slime-devel] [RfC] Reorganization of source

Hi, I'd like to suggest a reorganization of the Slime sources. Some not-so-long time ago, there has been some vague consensus of factoring some parts of Slime out into a contrib/ directory. The intention of this mail is to straighten out the vagueness while building upon the consensus. I propose: a) to introduce a new file `swank-utils.lisp' (and perhaps also `slime-utils.el') and collect common utility functions there in. Gripe: `swank.lisp' is currently almost 6000 lines long. As a result, it's very hard to get an overview of what's there already, and consequently what could be reused in other (or new!) parts. Also there's some stuff that can be very useful for foreign projects that perhaps would like to take advantage, but don't want all of SWANK (the arglist stuff comes to mind.) b) to introduce a new directory `modules/' that contain self-contained subsystems. For instance: modules/ inspector/ fuzzy-compl/ These subdirectories contain both Common Lisp and Elisp code. It's subject to further discussion what's the best way of loading these subsystems. Are there special requirements? The purpose is to reduce the line count of `swank.lisp' while aiding understanding by explicitely decoupling of independent subsystems. Also to establish the ground work for a plugin architecture if this deems useful. c) to introduce a new directory `backends/' and place all the `swank-sbcl.lisp', `swank-clisp.lisp' &c files there. This is merely for aesthetical reasons (less clutter in the main source directory) and hence rather optionally. -T.

Hi, I made a reference card for SLIME. I know that it is easy to look up commands using Emacs, but sometimes I forget that there are commands for what I want to do. It is written in LaTeX, with minimal dependencies. A PDF file is also included, it fits on a single page. If the developers consider this worthy of inclusion, I contribute it into SLIME under its current license. Best, Tamas

Hi Tobias, here's a comment on one of your recent changes. 2007-06-16 Tobias C. Rittweiler <tcr(a)freebits.de> * slime.el: Pressing `C-M-a' (beginning-of-defun) in midst of the last REPL prompt directs the cursor to the beginning of the prompt. Pressing it again, would do nothing; now it moves the cursor to the start of the previous prompt (as it's consistent with the behaviour when the cursor was placed midst one of the old prompts.) Likewise for `C-M-e' (end-of-defun) (slime-keys): New bindings for `C-M-a' and `C-M-e' to SLIME-BEGINNING-OF-DEFUN and SLIME-END-OF-DEFUN respectively. (slime-repl-mode-map): Removed bindings for `C-M-a' and `C-M-e', as they're now inherited from SLIME-KEYS. (slime-repl-beginning-of-defun, slime-repl-end-of-defun): Jump to the previous (next) prompt if called twice in a row. In general overriding C-M-a and C-M-e is not necessary since the variables `beginnning-of-defun-function' and `end-of-defun-function' can be given buffer-local values. (Also note that just overriding C-M-a and C-M-e is not enough, since there is another binding for these functions on C-M-home and C-M-end.) Such a `beginnning-of-defun-function' and `end-of-defun-function' are actually already defined in SLIME REPL mode, invoking `slime-repl-previous-prompt', `slime-repl-next-prompt'. I suspect your code is just working around a bug in `slime-repl-previous-prompt', `slime-repl-next-prompt', which should be fixed instead. Would you like to work on this? It might be nice to have a compatibility matrix or something on the front page, as I think knowing who-supports-what in SWANK could be of great importance to some.
