For food, there's the cheesecake factory in woodfield mall, and there's the ram just north of that. Having it in a bar might not be a good idea as we may exclude some people under 21. Hi. I just saw this list and signed up for it. The description says coomon lisp and scheme, but it's hosted on common-lisp.net, so I was wondering if it's a mainly common lisp focused thing. (I'm a scheme guy) (And sometimes I'm a "scheme without the set! command" guy). If everything is fair game we should get a link on schemers.org "user groups" page. What's the next event?

[chicago-lisp] Gui interfaces

I'm having GUI troubles, and I thought i'd see what everyone else is doing... I'm having GUI troubles. Right now i'm using drscheme, which has unicode, a gui, and a builder. However, the gui is insanely slow. I do lots of complicated nested panels, and a screen refresh is taking over 15 seconds right now (it's getting too slow even for development work now). Gtk objects work much faster (but aren't stable as the gtk-ffi-lib is't finished) Now I have the system split into a client and server, for just this type of problem.... The system can be interactively tested in the client, which is very helpfull during development. Now if the client is written in scheme, then I can abuse the client/server spec, and add features on the client side... then when they are working, move them to their proper place on the server.... My other thoughts were to make a "thin gui client", which just managed events... so like we could have a client in any language that would recieve event X from the mouse, and pass to the server "event X happened". I tried writing the interface originally in java, but java seemed to freak on recursions. It's been a while, but if I remember right, it was like when a type A panel held a type B panel, which held a type A panel. (wouldn't even compile) So I guess what i'm looking for is: unicode support Since it's part of the development cycle (i.e. 90% of the gui objects are to test things that aren't fully completed features yet), a GUI builder would be important. and finally code portability or "thin-ness". i'm defining these as: if it's a scheme implementation that I can just cut and paste to the server code it's "portable", if its written in assembly but just passes events back and fourth, maintaining no real state, then it's "thin". Hey all, I notice there has been very little activity on this list for the past few months. Is there anything happening with this group? Recently I picked up Practical Common Lisp, and so far it is about the best programming book I have ever read. This is my first real exposure to Lisp; by day I am stuck working in Java and loathing every minute of it. Lisp is really opening my mind, though not in the same head-exploding way as Haskell (which I am also trying to pick up). If there are any plans for another meeting, or any sort of group project, I'd like to try getting involved. No doubt I would be the least proficient Lisp programmer of the bunch, but it would be fun all the same. Thanks, Jason Foreman

Brian Mastenbrook and I each presented a paper at the 2005 International Lisp Conference, and we both thought it would be worthwhile to do a repeat performance for the Chicago LUG. Brian's paper (with coauthors) is about Climacs, a syntax-aware editor writing in Common Lisp. It does controlled reparsing of text upon editing. He has nifty graphical demos. My paper is on the ANSI Common Lisp conformance test suite that's distributed with GNU Common Lisp. It's had a large impact on many CL implementations, and I think the lessons learned in testing apply to other languages as well. I'll let everyone know when we've scheduled these. Hi Lispers, I'm a total Lisp newbie working my way through the new Practical Common Lisp book and I've encountered an odd problem. Using these functions: (defun prompt-read (prompt) (format *query-io* "~a: " prompt) (force-output *query-io*) (read-line *query-io*)) (defun prompt-twice() (prompt read (prompt-read "hello")) Running this on the REPL: (prompt-twice) Gives me the following output: hello: hi hi: "" NIL The program exits before I have a change to enter anything on the hi: line. Any Lisp guys out there wanna set me straight? I'm using Lisp in a Box on Suse 9.2 Pro. Thanks, PJ

So, I think I keep forgetting that MAICS is in Ohio... I had been chatting with Brian a while back about the possibility of the second Chicago Lisp meeting. I keep coming back to the thought that I personally would be interested in hearing more about the kind of stuff that Brian and Eric Berkowitz <http://cs.roosevelt.edu/eric/> having been doing, especially since Roosevelt is in our backyard.
